Royals put 2B Infante on DL, Call up Ciriaco

Omar Infante Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals placed second baseman Omar Infante on the disabled list with a lower back injury and selected the contract of infielder Pedro Ciriaco from Triple-A Omaha before their game Tuesday night against Colorado.

Infante has been dealing with disc irritation. His move to the DL was retroactive to May 7.

Ciriaco began the season on the 40-man roster and appeared in a game April 2 against Detroit as a pinch runner. He was designated for assignment on April 5, and was hitting .305 with six doubles, a triple and a homer in 19 games for Omaha.

For the time being, the Royals are sticking with third baseman Mike Moustakas, who has been slumping all season. There had been speculation that he would be sent to Omaha this week.

Huskers Can’t Make it in Time to Play Creighton

husker baseballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s baseball game against Creighton scheduled for Tuesday night at TD Ameritrade Park has been cancelled because of the Cornhuskers’ travel issues.

Nebraska spokesman Jeremy Foote said the Huskers’ problems started in East Lansing, Mich., on Monday. Their 4-1 win at Michigan State was shortened to seven innings because of delays caused by rain and a shooting near campus. The team’s flight to Chicago was canceled because of inclement weather.

After an overnight bus trip to Joliet, Ill., the Huskers spent a few hours at a hotel. Another bus that was supposed to take the team to Omaha was two hours late, making it impossible for the Huskers to make it to the ballpark on time for the Creighton game.

The Huskers won two previous games against Creighton this season.

Judge Denies NCAA Motion in O’Bannon Lawsuit

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsThe judge in former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon’s antitrust lawsuit on Monday denied a motion filed by the NCAA as part of a bid to delay the scheduled start of the trial next month in federal court.

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken ruled against the NCAA in a motion that questioned her earlier decision on what the NCAA can use as a defense in a case that has the potential to drastically alter the way college sports are regulated.

The ruling involved one of the four motions the NCAA has filed in an effort to delay the trial over compensation for athletes for playing major sports that generate billions of dollars in revenue for the NCAA and its member schools.

The trial is scheduled to begin June 9.

Senators ask NCAA to Better Protect Athletes

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A U.S. Senate committee wants the NCAA to start providing college athletes with greater protections from “exploitative practices” on campuses.

In a letter addressed to NCAA President Mark Emmert and obtained by The Associated Press on Monday, the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation asked the NCAA to send information describing what protections are already in place. The letter, signed by three Democrats, insisted more needs to be done for athletes.

The senators wrote that if the NCAA was accomplishing its mission by protecting college athletes, there would be no need for a players’ union. In February, a National Labor Relations Board regional office ruled that Northwestern’s football players could unionize. A vote was held in April, but the decision has been appealed.

North-Platte-Bulldogs-Football HelmetThe North Platte Bulldogs football team will once again be hosting the Bulldog Football Camps this summer.

The emphasis of each camp will be to work basic position fundamentals, as well as group and team activities.

The camps will be held at the North Platte High School football fields and will be conducted by the NPHS coaching staff and other guest coaches. There will also be current high school and college football players that have played at NPHS.

These camps offer a great opportunity to develop the North Platte Bulldogs football program and the youth football programs in North Platte. They will help each player become more effective on the field.

The camps will be held for three age groups: Pups (4th-6th graders), Jr. High (7th-8th graders), High School (9th-12th graders). The Pups camp will take place May 20-22 between 9:30 and 11:00 am each day.  The Junior High camp will be June 2-5 from 9:00 to 11:00 am each day. The High School camp will take place June 2-6 and will begin at 6:00 pm each evening.

Sherman says the horse had no problems with the flight and is ready to resume his bid at becoming the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

Escobar and Giavotella Homer in Royals Win

kc-royalsSEATTLE (AP) — Alcides Escobar hit a grand slam and Johnny Giavotella added a three-run shot to give the Kansas City Royals a comeback 9-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Escobar had provided a 4-0 lead for the Royals in the second with his first career home run off starter Roenis Elias.

But the Mariners rallied behind Dustin Ackley’s two homers and Kyle Seager’s one to take a 7-5 lead in the fifth.

Kansas City took a 9-7 lead in the seventh, scoring four runs off reliever Danny Farquhar (1-1), highlighted by Giavotella’s three-run blast over the left-field wall.

Entering the game, the Royals had hit just 14 home runs, lowest in baseball. But seven of their nine runs scored via the long ball.

Louis Coleman (1-0), who worked a scoreless sixth, earned the victory.

Greg Holland came on in the ninth to pick up his ninth save in 10 opportunities.

Frazier, Bailey Lead Reds to 4-1 Win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesCINCINNATI (AP) — Aroldis Chapman made his first major league appearance since being hit above the eye by a line drive during spring training, striking out the side in the ninth with his 100 mph fastball to close out the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies 4-1 Sunday.

Todd Frazier hit his second 400-foot home run in three days to back Homer Bailey’s shutdown pitching as Cincinnati won the rubber match of its three-game series with Colorado.

Chapman was greeted by a standing ovation from the crowd of 33,143. He reached 100 mph with his first pitch and topped out at 102 mph in earning the save. Chapman had been out since being hit above the left eye by a line drive during a spring training game on March 19.

Skip Schumaker drove in two runs and the Reds capitalized on two Colorado throwing errors to send the Rockies to their third loss in four games.

Cody Latimer Didn’t Have to Shop for New Clothes

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Cody Latimer is already a good fit in Denver and he has yet to suit up in orange and blue. Well, blue at least.

The Indiana wide receiver arrived at team headquarters Saturday sporting a crisp orange dress shirt, white pants and orange leather dress shoes.

No surprise there — except that he didn’t race out on a midnight shopping run in Manhattan after the Broncos selected him in the second round of the NFL draft Friday night.

Latimer says the outfit was the same one he wore to his senior prom at Jefferson Township High School in Dayton, Ohio, in 2011.
