“Jessi will bring depth to our outfield and middle,” Higgins said.

Maddie Bosco of Canon City, Colo. attends Canon City High School. She will play in the infield for the Knights.

“I chose North Platte because it gave me the opportunity to play softball and the school has the program I want for my career,” Bosco said.

“Maddie will provide infield depth and she can play anywhere in the infield but the mound,” Higgins said.

Brittney Curtis of Omaha attends Burke High School. She will play second or third base for the Knights.

Sara Villalobos of Skiatook, Okla. attends Skiatook High School. She will play catcher and the outfield for the Knights.

Storm Win 5-3 Over Des Moines

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm (16-21-2) won in comeback fashion again Friday night at the Viaero Event Center, capturing game one of a weekend series with the Des Moines Buccaneers (14-20-3) 5-3.

Chris Wilkie stayed hot, scoring a goal to extend his point-streak to nine games, while Dan Labosky converted a penalty shot late in the third period to seal the victory.

The Storm have won their last three games after trailing earlier in the contest.

Wilkie, the North Dakota commit who was named USHL Player of the Week last week, found the back of the net first to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. The goal came on a crisp pass from forward Ryan McMurphy. The Storm took their lead into the first intermission.

Jack Jenkins answered back early in the second period for Des Moines to tie the game at 1-1.

After a chippy end to the second period, the Storm and Buccaneers entered the third tied at one apiece.

Six minutes into the third period Buccaneer defensemen Garret Cockerill, scored a power play goal by sneaking the puck past Hayden Lavigne to give his team a 2-1 lead.

Then with six minutes remaining in the game, the St. Cloud, Minn. native Austin Poganski rocketed a power play goal into the net, with assists coming from Garrett Gamez and Conner Valesano.

Poganski’s goal was his eighth of the year with a man-advantage, which leads the team.

With just 2:01 remaining on the clock, Labosky was dragged down while on a breakaway. The Colorado College commit converted on the ensuing penalty shot for his fourth goal of the season. The tally gave Tri-City the lead and momentum for the final minutes.

Des Moines pulled goaltender Ryan Ruck in the closing seconds in an effort to get back in the game. Defenseman Tory Dello took advantage, shooting from center ice on the open net for his second goal of the season.

Moments later, after a turnover by Des Moines, forward Chase Burger also made the most of an empty net, scoring his eighth goal of the season.

In the closing seconds with Tri-City in control, Cockerill scored his second goal of the game, but when time ran out, the scoreboard read a 5-3 Storm victory.

Lavigne won his third consecutive and fourth overall, finishing the evening with 23 saves. Ruck made 33 stops in the loss for the Buccaneers.

Tri-City will surge into February after finishing the month of January on a four game winning streak. The Storm had an overall record of 7-4 in the first month of 2014.

Head coach Jim Hulton’s boys are back in action Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Viaero Event Center, looking to sweep the weekend series with Des Moines.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Nolan Aibel and Nick Hutchison, along with defensemen Cutler Martin and Sean Lang. Forward Drew Mayer was also scratched, serving a suspension.…

Royals Fans Soak Up Spring Fever as Snow Falls

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals ace James Shields says he is open to discussing a contract extension that would keep him in Kansas City past the end of this season, when he is eligible for free agency.

That news should make fans, already flying high over a strong finish a year ago, feel even better as they turned out for the team’s annual FanFest on Friday.

The Royals exercised their $13.5 million option on Shields’ contract shortly after finishing 86-76, their best record since 1989.

Shields told reporters he was open to discussing a new deal but that those talks have not begun. He also said rumors he was seeking a contract similar that of Zack Greinke, who signed a $147 million, six-year contract with the Dodgers, were untrue.

John Fox Says Broncos Ready for Sunday

DenverBroncosFLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — After putting his team through its final full practice of the season on Friday afternoon, Denver Broncos coach John Fox declared his team ready to go for the Super Bowl.

The Broncos used the indoor field at the New York Jets practice facility for their nearly 90-minute practice after Fox determined that the outdoor synthetic field was too hard.

Yet the regimen came with another twist: Fox used the outdoor field for the 30-minute walkthrough before the practice, allowing for more exposure to the type of wintry elements that could be in play on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

Huskers Hope to Slow Red Hot Hawkeyes

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska women’s basketball team closes its first half of Big Ten Conference play by traveling to Iowa on Saturdayafternoon.

Tip-off between the Huskers (14-5, 4-3 Big Ten) and the Hawkeyes (17-5, 5-3 Big Ten) is set for 2 p.m. (CT) with live radio coverage provided by the Husker Sports Network. The Huskers head to Iowa after producing their best all-around performance with an 84-51 win over Michigan at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln on Wednesday night. All-American Jordan Hooper led the Big Red with 25 points and 10 rebounds while etching her name in Nebraska and Big Ten history. Hooper moved past 2010 All-American Kelsey Griffin into No. 3 on the Husker career scoring list with 2,053 points. Hooper also pulled down the 1,000th rebound of her career to tie 1993 Wade Trophy winner Karen Jennings at No. 3 on the NU career rebound list, while joining Griffin and Jennings as the only Huskers in history to reach the combined milestones of 2,000 points and 1,000 boards. Hooper became just the fifth player in Big Ten history to achieve those marks.

Hooper made history with Griffin sitting on the Husker bench after having her No. 23 jersey retired in pregame ceremonies. Griffin, a four-year WNBA veteran with the Connecticut Sun, made the trip back to Lincoln from her professional season in Australia to watch her first Nebraska game since her historic Husker career came to a close in March of 2010.

Hooper heads to Carver-Hawkeye arena averaging 19.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Junior forward Emily Cady has matched Hooper with a Big Ten-best nine double-doubles on the year, averaging 14.1 points and 9.4 boards per contest, including 15.1 points and 11.0 boards in Big Ten play. Sophomore point guard Rachel Theriot has added 13.0 points and 6.2 assists on the season, after producing her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists against the Wolverines.

Carroll and Fox enjoying Super Bowl moment

Super Bowl 48NEW YORK (AP) — As if they were enjoying a morning coffee together, Pete Carroll and John Fox fulfilled their final media obligations leading to the Super Bowl.

Relaxed, self-assured and even charming, the coaches of the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos answered questions for 30 minutes on Friday, joking with each other and the audience.

No grumpy one-sentence responses. No agitated reactions to edgy queries. At one point, Fox wondered if he could say a specific crude word to the audience on hand. Watching on television, he then went ahead and used the word. Carroll immediately quipped: “You can’t say that, John,” eliciting laughs from reporters — and from Fox.

Neither man seemed overwhelmed or even antsy about the biggest game of his life coming up on Sunday.

Utah Ape Predicts Seahawks Will Win Super bowl

Utah Ape Seahawks Super Bowl 48SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah ape that has correctly picked the Super Bowl winner for six straight years is predicting the Seattle Seahawks will be the next NFL champion.

Erica Hansen of Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City says Eli the ape ran into an enclosure Thursday and swiftly knocked down a papier-mache helmet bearing the Seahawks logo, signaling his pick. She says there was no hesitation.

That could mean bad news for Broncos fans. The 13-year-old primate hasn’t been wrong since 2006.

Last year, Eli charged out and knocked over a papier-mache goal post decorated with the Ravens logo. Sure enough, the Ravens beat the 49ers 34-31.
