Rockies starter Jeff Francis was tagged with four earned runs, ending his streak of 13 scoreless innings to start the spring. Husker Wrestling Places Seventh at Big Ten Championships
Three Husker wrestlers placed in the top three in their respective weight classes at the Big Ten Championships in Champaign, Illinois over the weekend, helping the Huskers to a seventh-place finish. Jake Sueflohn and James Green wrestled in championship matches at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, but both fell to defeat. 174-pounder Robert Kokesh won his third place match. The Huskers conclude their season at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, starting March 21.
Irish, Dawgs Fall at State
The North Platte Bulldogs and St. Patrick’s Irish were eliminated on day one of the boys basketball state tournament yesterday in Lincoln. In their first appearance since 2004, the Dawgs hung tough against second-ranked Omaha South before the Packers pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 52-36 victory at the Devaney Center in Class A first-round play. Drew Callaghan posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Luke Wright added nine points. The Dawgs end their season with a 16-8 record. The Irish were unable to win their third straight first round game, falling to Hartington Cedar Catholic 56-49 at Lincoln High School in round one of the Class C2 tourney. Joseph Clinch scored 15 points to lead the Irish. Alex Harms contributed 12 points. The Irish end their campaign with a record of 22-4.
Husker Women Face Iowa in Big Ten Tourney Second Round
The Husker women’s basketball team finished one step shy of a Big Ten tournament championship in their inaugural season in the league. They fell to Purdue in a double-overtime thriller in the title game in Indianapolis last year. Nebraska’s quest for a conference tourney crown begins anew this afternoon, as the second-seeded Huskers face Iowa in second-round action. The seventh-seeded Hawkeyes played their way into Round 2 with a 60-55 win over Northwestern yesterday afternoon. The Huskers knocked off the Hawkeyes in both of their regular season meetings this season. The Big Red held on for a 76-75 win when the two met in Iowa City on February 11, and then routed the Hawkeyes 66-46 in the return game in Lincoln 13 days later. Today’s game tips off at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at 11:30 AM.
Broncos Looking to Slash Dumervil’s Salary
Elvis Dumervil may not be a Denver Bronco much longer. The Broncos are looking to restructure the contract of the veteran defensive end as a cost-cutting measure. Dumervil, who is scheduled to make a guaranteed $12 million dollars next season, had 11 sacks and forced six fumbles in 2012. Dumervil’s agent told the Denver Post that his client wants to stay with the Broncos and will negotiate with them to try and come to an amicable solution, but the Broncos may be willing to cut Dumervil and use the savings to pursue potentially cheaper free agents like former Indianapolis Colt Dwight Freeney.
Rockies to Face Unbeaten Royals in Cactus League Play
The Colorado Rockies face the Kansas City Royals tonight in Cactus League action after their first off-day of the spring yesterday. Jorge de la Rosa will take the mound for the Rockies, looking to make progress in his third start of the spring. Former Rockie Jeremy Guthrie will be the starting pitcher for the Royals, who are undefeated in the Cactus League thus far. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10.

The North Platte Community College Knights will play for a Region IX Men’s Basketball Championship tonight. They cruised past Northeastern Junior College 84-59 in semifinal action last night in Casper, Wyoming. North Platte scored the game’s first seven points and would never trail. They held NJC without a field goal for a ten-and-a-half minute stretch in the first half to build a 23-point lead and led by as many as 30 in the second half. Aboubacar Casse posted season highs of 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Knights to the victory. Tim Simmons scored 17 points, while Ethan Montalvo added 16 points. The win is the 10th in a row for the 21st-ranked Knights. They will face Otero in the championship game tonight. Huskers Host Gophers in Devaney Center’s Final Bow
One final time, it’s game night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Husker men’s basketball team closes the old barn down after 37 years of faithful service tonight, as they host Minnesota. It’s also senior night for the Huskers, who will honor Brandon Ubel, Dylan Talley and Andre Almeida in a pregame ceremony. The Huskers have never had a losing season at the Devaney Center, winning games at a .751 percentage in the building’s history. The Gophers come in to tonight’s game on a two-game winning streak, and have reached 20 wins for the fifth time in six seasons under Tubby Smith. The Huskers fell to Minnesota 84-65 in their first meeting this season back on January 29 despite a 30-point effort from Ray Gallegos. Tip-off tonight in Lincoln is set for 8:06.
Huskers Host UNC Bears in Doubleheader Action
The Husker baseball team takes on Northern Colorado in a double-header at Hawks Field this afternoon. The teams were originally scheduled to play yesterday, but the game was pushed back to today. The Huskers are fresh off their first two wins of the campaign, sweeping a two-game set against New Mexico in their first home games of the season. Game one is set to start at 12:05, with the second game scheduled to start 45 minutes after the end of the first game.
