Husker Women Run Win Streak to Ten

Hailie Sample’s layup off an assist from Lindsey Moore with 43 seconds left brought No. 20 Nebraska all the way back from a five-point deficit in the closing minutes for a 55-53 win at the Kohl Center on Thursday night.

The late heroics by Sample, Moore and Rachel Theriot were enough to stretch Nebraska’s winning streak to 10 straight games and improve to 22-6 overall and 12-3 in the Big Ten. NU’s 12 league wins are the second most in school history.

Sample, who also teamed with Moore to secure another one-possession road win at Iowa (Feb. 11) during Nebraska’s winning streak, finished with six points. Moore, who added the front end of a one-and-one free throw with 9.9 seconds left, led Nebraska with 13 points, while adding six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Theriot, a freshman from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, was also huge down the stretch for the Huskers. Theriot hit four of NU’s nine field goals in the second half, including a shot with 3:00 left to pull the Huskers within 51-50 and another one with 1:36 left to give NU a 52-51 lead to set Sample’s game-winning shot. Theriot finished with 11 points, two assists and a steal.

Sophomore Emily Cady added eight points, 11 rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots, while Jordan Hooper pitched in seven points and 11 boards of her own. The Huskers also got contributions off the bench, outscoring UW’s reserves 10-0 in the game.

Rox Turn Triple Play in Cactus League Victory

The starting pitching for the Colorado Rockies has looked sharp early this spring. Juan Nicasio and Jeff Francis combined for five shutout innings as the Rockies defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in Cactus League play yesterday. The Rockies got some nifty defense as well, as third baseman Nolan Arenado, second baseman Eric Young and first baseman Henry Wrigley combined to turn a 5-4-3 triple play. Arenado and DJ LeMahieu had RBI for the Rockies offensively. The Rockies take on the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon.

Sailor Girls Eliminated at State

The Sutherland Lady Sailors were bounced out of the Class D1 girls basketball state tournament last night, falling to St. Mary’s 52-34 in Lincoln. An early three-point play by Sam Kennedy helped the Sailors to a first-quarter lead, but the Cardinals went on a 14-0 first half run as the Sailors struggled to make shots throughout the half. A 15-point lead was briefly trimmed to seven by the Sailors after an 8-0 run, but St. Mary’s hit a buzzer beating three to take a ten-point lead into the locker room. Sutherland could get no closer than eight points in the second half. Jalyne Schuster led the Sailors with 11 points. Joli Hopping chipped in seven points, and Kennedy finished with six points and a team-best nine rebounds. The season ends for the Lady Sailors with an overall record of 20-6.

Nuggets Edge Blazers

Ty Lawson and Andre Iguodala combined for 59 points as the Denver Nuggets held off the Portland Trail Blazers 111-109 last night in Portland. Andre Miller’s layup with 24 seconds left broke a 106-all tie. The Blazers had a chance to win in the final seconds but LaMarcus’ Aldridge’s buzzer-beater went begging. The win is Denver’s third in a row. They’re back in action Friday night hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder.

No. 20 Huskers Visit Wisconsin

The No. 20 Nebraska women’s basketball team shoots for just the second double-digit winning streak in school history while trying to secure the No. 2 seed at next week’s Big Ten Tournament when the Huskers take on Wisconsin Thursday night in Madison.

Tip-off between the red-hot Huskers (21-6, 11-3 Big Ten) and the Badgers (11-16, 3-11 Big Ten) is set for 7 p.m. (central) at the Kohl Center, as Nebraska shoots for a season series sweep of Wisconsin.

Nebraska will try to close out Big Ten road action with a six-game road winning streak – the second-longest in school history. A win would give NU a 7-1 Big Ten road mark, which would be the second-best conference road record in school history, trailing only Nebraska’s 2010 Big 12 championship squad that finished a perfect 8-0 away from the Devaney Center.

Nebraska stretched its overall winning streak to nine games with a 66-46 run past Iowa in Lincoln on Sunday. Rachel Theriot poured in a career-high 19 points, including 15 in the second half. All-America candidates Jordan Hooper and Lindsey Moore both added double figures in the win, which completed a season sweep of the Hawkeyes. Nebraska held its third straight Big Ten foe to a season-low point total, as the 46 scored by Iowa joined the 39 allowed to Ohio State (Feb. 14) and Michigan (Feb. 21).
