After last night’s boys basketball district final games, the North Platte Bulldogs and St. Patrick’s Irish learned their seeds for the state tournament next week. The Dawgs will be the seventh seed in the Class A bracket. They’ll face Omaha South in first-round play at 2 PM next Thursday. The Irish ended up with the fourth seed in the C2 field. That matches them up against Hartington Cedar Catholic at 10:45 AM. ESPN Radio 1410 will broadcast both first-round contests live.

Huskers Routed by Badgers
It got ugly in a hurry for the Husker men’s basketball team last night in Madison. They were blitzed right from the get-go by 17th-ranked Wisconsin, and ended up losing by a 77-46 score. The Badgers shot 59 percent in the first half on their way to putting the Huskers in a 21-point halftime hole. Things got no better for Nebraska in the second half, despite Dylan Talley’s game-high 21 points. The Huskers are back in action this Saturday at Illinois.
Nationally Ranked Knights Prepare For Region IX Tournament
The North Platte Community College Knights made their debut in the NJCAA Top 25 poll this week, coming in at number 22. The Knights concluded their regular season with seven straight wins and captured the Region IX South sub-region championship. They’ll be the number two overall seed at the Region IX tournament in Casper, Wyoming, beginning Saturday. The Knights will play Dawson Community College in first-round action Saturday afternoon.

Nuggets Visit Portland in Northwest Division Battle
The Denver Nuggets shoot for their third straight win tonight at the Rose Garden in Portland, as they take on the Trail Blazers. The two teams have split their first two meetings this season, with each team holding serve on their home court. The Nuggets are battling for home court advantage in the Western Conference first round, trailing Memphis by 2.5 games for the fourth seed. The Blazers need a win to stay in the playoff hunt. They sit tenth in the West. Tipoff tonight is set for 9:30.
Chacin Sharp, de la Rosa Struggles in Rockies Loss
The Colorado Rockies’ two most important starting pitchers both took the mound in the Rockies’ 4-2 Cactus League loss to the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Jhoulys Chacin worked two hitless, scoreless innings to start the game. Jorge de la Rosa scuffled a bit in relief, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in his two innings. Carlos Gonzalez had two hits to lead the Rockies offensively. The Rockies face a San Diego Padres split-squad this afternoon.
Husker-Hawkeye Gridiron Clash Approved For “Black Friday”
The Big Ten Conference Administrators Council has approved the request from Nebraska and Iowa to move the 2013 football game between the schools to Friday, Nov. 29 at Memorial Stadium.
“The Big Ten Conference Administrators Council approved the request for the Nebraska-Iowa Heroes Game to remain on the Friday after Thanksgiving in 2013 and 2014,” Nebraska Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst said. “Playing on the day after Thanksgiving is a great Nebraska football tradition that we look forward to continuing.”
Nebraska and Iowa have met on the Friday after Thanksgiving in both 2011 and 2012, Nebraska’s first two years in the Big Ten Conference. The 2013 game in Lincoln will mark the 24th straight season Nebraska has played on the day after Thanksgiving.

Big Night For North Platte Hoops: Irish Win District, While Dawgs Clinch Wild Card
For the first time since 1934, the North Platte Bulldogs and St. Patrick’s Irish boys basketball teams are both going to the state tournament. The Irish won their way into the Class C2 field by defeating Hemingford 51-43 in the C2-6 district final in Sidney. Joseph Clinch scored 17 points and Mark Mayfield added 15 points, and the Irish sunk 12 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off a late Bobcats charge. The Irish are headed to state for the third straight season and the eleventh time overall. The Dawgs learned they would be the Class A Wild Card after the top five seeds in the class all won their district finals last night. It will be North Platte’s 37th trip to the state tourney, and their first since Danny Woodhead led the way to Lincoln in 2004. ESPN Radio 1410 will have coverage of the Dawgs and the Irish from the state tournament next Thursday.
Huskers Face No. 17 Wisconsin
The Husker men’s basketball team goes for their second straight victory tonight in Madison as they face 17th-ranked Wisconsin. Nebraska played the Badgers tight in their first meeting this season. They were within a basket in the final minute before Wisconsin eventually pulled out a 47-41 win at the Devaney Center on January 6. The Badgers come into tonight’s game having won five of their last six. Tipoff tonight at the Kohl Center is set for 8:05.
Shields Wins Freshman of the Week
Nebraska freshman forward Shavon Shields received his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of the season. Shields scored 17 points, 12 of them in the second half, to help lift the Huskers to a come-from-behind victory over Iowa last Saturday. It was his fifth double-figure scoring game in Big Ten play. He also added seven rebounds in the win. Shields is averaging 8.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game this season.
Nuggets Fast Break Too Much For Lakers
The Denver Nuggets snapped the Los Angeles Lakers’ three-game winning streak with a 119-108 win at Pepsi Center. Up-tempo basketball was the key to Denver’s success, as theyoutscored the Lakers in the fast break points department 33-3. Wilson Chandler scored 23 points and Ty Lawson added 22 points to lead the Nuggets to victory. The Nuggets are back in action Wednesday night at Portland.
