Lady Knights Fall, but Knights Men Roll at McCook
The North Platte Knights and Lady Knights were in action last night at McCook. In the first game of the double-header, a late comeback fell short as the Lady Knights were defeated by the Lady Indians 86-69. North Platte trimmed a 23-point second-half deficit down to 10 with five minutes to play, but would get no closer. Paige Hasty’s 18 points led the Lady Knights in the loss. The Lady Knights fall to 12-9 on the season. In the men’s game, a 15-2 first half run gave the Knights a lead they would never relinquish in a 63-47 triumph over the Indians. Tim Simmons poured in a season-high 19 points to lead the Knights, who improved to 16-4 with their fourth straight win. The Knights and Lady Knights are back in action on Thursday night. They host the Eastern Wyoming College Lancers and Lady Lancers at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.
Gallegos’ Big Night For Naught in Husker Loss
Nebraska picked a bad night to run into a steaming mad Minnesota team. The 23rd-ranked Golden Gophers snapped their four game losing streak in pummeling the Huskers 84-65 in Minneapolis. The Huskers wasted a career-best effort from Ray Gallegos, who poured in 30 points. He’s the first Husker to score 30 in a game since 2008. The Huskers drop to 11-11 and 2-7 in Big Ten play with the loss. They host eleventh-ranked Ohio State on Saturday night.
Nuggets Face Rockets
The Denver Nuggets shoot for their fifth straight win as they host the Houston Rockets tonight. Denver held off Indiana 102-101 on Monday night to improve to 28-18 on the season. They have beaten the Rockets five consecutive times. The Nuggets enter tonight as the fourth highest scoring team in the NBA, while the Rockets are number two in scoring, so fireworks should ensue tonight. Tipoff in Denver is set for 8 PM.
Storm Top Sioux City Behind Bonner’s Two Goals
Three unanswered third-period goals led the Tri-City Storm to a 5-2 victory over the Sioux City Musketeers at the Viaero Events Center in Kearney. Michael Vecchione’s goal with 12 minutes left proved to be the game winner. Tim Bonner added two goals for the Storm. Joel L’Esperance and Cutler Martin also tallied as the Storm won their second game in their last three. The Storm are on the road Friday night taking on the Des Moines Buccaneers.
Braylon Heard Rumored to be Transferring From Nebraska
Sophomore running back Braylon Heard is reportedly close to leaving the Nebraska football program. A news source from Heard’s hometown of Youngstown, Ohio first reported Heard’s desire to transfer late Monday night. That news came as a surprise to Bo Pelini, who told Nebraska media outlets he hadn’t heard such a thing himself. Former Husker teammate Aaron Green appeared to confirm the transfer on Twitter yesterday, but there’s been no word from Heard himself. Heard carried 52 times for 357 yards and three touchdowns last season.
