NHL and Players Reach Agreement to End Lockout

After 16 hours of tense talks and a relentless push from a federal mediator, the National Hockey League and its players have finally reached a deal to end a lockout that’s wiped out nearly four months of the season.

The 10-year deal would see the players’ share of hockey-related income drop from 57 percent to a 50-50 split and a lowering of the salary cap. It still needs to be ratified by team owners and the players.

Fans are expressing relief that the lockout appears about to end, but also some bitterness. Paul Corrie of Manor, Pennsylvania, says he will be happy to see his beloved Penguins back on the ice, but he’ll be watching on TV.

Corrie says he won’t spend any money on tickets or NHL  licensed merchandise, at least for this season. Though he adds his decision isn’t likely to have much impact with money issues seemingly as much a part of pro sports now as the games themselves.

Schedule issues still have to be worked out, but the NHL  has developed plans for 50- and 48-game seasons.

Nuggets Suffer Rare Home Defeat

The Denver Nuggets were outhustled by the Minnesota Timberwolves in a rare home loss last night. The Timberwolves grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and made big shots down the stretch in a 102-97 victory in Denver. It’s just the second loss in 12 home games for the Nuggets this season. Ty Lawson and Kosta Koufos scored 16 points apiece in Denver’s losing effort. The Nuggets drop to 18-16 with the loss. Their three-game homestand concludes with a matchup against Utah tomorrow night.

Manning’s Big Month Earns Him AFC Honor

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was named the AFC’s Offensive Player of the Month for December. Manning joined Kurt Warner in 2001 as the only players to compile 10 TDs, 1,300 yards, a 70 percent completion percentage and five wins in the month of December as the Broncos continued their eleven-game winning streak and secured the top seed in the AFC playoffs. It’s the sixth time Manning has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Month, tying him with Tom Brady for the most all-time.

SWIMMING: Bulldogs Compete at GI Double Dual

The North Platte boys and girls swim teams took part in a double dual in Grand Island Wednesday, taking on the host Islanders and McCook. The boys defeated the Bison 61-28 and lost to Grand Island 60-34. The girls fell to McCook 50-37 and also lost to GI 69-23. North Platte’s boys had overall winning times in two events. Zac Burns was tops in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.03. The 400 freestyle relay team of Zach Saner, Caleb Cox, Erik Davis, and Matthew Walsh had the top time in that event at 4:53.02.

Thursday Sports Day – Get Ready For Fireworks at Fiesta Bowl

GLENDALE, Calif. (AP) — College football’s never-ending bowl schedule continues tonight with the Fiesta Bowl. It features two teams that were in the national championship discussion before each suffered a late-season loss.

Fifth-ranked Oregon meets No. 7 Kansas State in a meeting of 11-1 clubs.

The Wildcats and Ducks are both in the top 5 of the BCS standings and have two of the nation’s most dynamic offenses, setting up what should be a second straight marquee Fiesta Bowl. Oklahoma State outlasted Stanford 41-38 in overtime last year.

It is a matchup of Oregon’s speed and Kansas State’s power. The Ducks play at a pace like few teams in college football and often score quickly with 44 of their 80 TD drives this season coming in two minutes or less. That includes 22 in 60 seconds or less. The Wildcats are a bit more methodical and will need to use their ball-possession ways to keep the ball away from Oregon’s offense.

K-State features dual-threat quarterback Colin Klein. The Heisman Trophy finalist threw for 2,490 yards and rushed for 890 more while accounting for 37 TDs.

Oregon running back Kenjon Barner is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Barner ran for 1,624 yards and 21 TDs, combining with DeAnthony Thomas to give the Ducks one of the most explosive running back tandems in college football.

Irish and Tide roll into Sunshine State

Top-ranked Notre Dame and No. 2 Alabama are in Florida and continuing preparations for Monday night’s BCS championship game. Both teams arrived in Fort Lauderdale yesterday afternoon for a matchup that was set more than a month ago.

It’s a return home for Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban. He coached the Miami Dolphins before famously saying toward the end of his tenure in South Florida that he wasn’t “going to be the Alabama coach.”

He was hired by the Tide not long afterward.

Light night on NBA hardwood

UNDATED (AP) — The NBA once again offers up a limited Thursday schedule with just two games to be contested.

The action gets under way with a matchup of division leaders. The Atlantic-leading New York Knicks will host Southwest leader San Antonio. The Spurs ride a seven-game winning streak into the Big Apple following last night’s win at Milwaukee.

More talks today

NEW YORK (AP) — Hockey players are sticking together as a union for now and are working long and late hours with the NHL to try to reach a new collective bargaining agreement to get the game back on the ice. They’ll be back at it today.

The sides met in small groups throughout the day Wednesday and then held a full-scale bargaining session with a federal mediator at night that lasted nearly five hours and didn’t wrap up until about 1 a.m. Thursday.

They planned to get back at it late this morning.

The biggest detail to emerge from Wednesday night’s marathon talks was that Donald Fehr is still the executive director of the players’ association, which passed on its first chance to declare a disclaimer that would dissolve the union and turn it into a trade association.

Last month, players voted overwhelmingly in favor of giving the union executive board the right to declare the disclaimer, but that permission expired at midnight Wednesday. The disclaimer would allow individual players to file antitrust lawsuits against the NHL.

Officials say there’s been some progress.

Moore Helps Shoot No. 25 Huskers Past Badgers

The 25th-ranked Husker women’s basketball team opened Big Ten play in style with a 70-52 win over Wisconsin at the Devaney Center last night. The hot-shooting Huskers hit 12 three-pointers on the night, including five from Lindsey Moore, who led the offensive effort with 26 points. Jordan Hooper chipped in 14 points, and Emily Cady contributed a double-double, with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Nebraska went on a 13-4 run in the late stages of the first half to take a nine-point lead into the locker room. They then went on an 8-2 run midway through the second half to hold off a Badger rally and take a double-digit lead that would never dip into single digits again. The Huskers move to 11-3 with the victory. They host fourteenth-ranked Purdue on Saturday afternoon, in a game that will be nationally televised on CBS.

Nuggets Hungry For More Home Cooking

The Denver Nuggets are hoping to catch fire with a heavy dose of home games ahead of them. They got off to a fine start on their current three-game homestand by topping the red hot Los Angeles Clippers on New Year’s night. Tonight, the Nuggets take their 10-1 home record into a matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Denver has split two meetings against the T-Wolves this season, both of them in Minnesota. Tipoff for tonight’s game in Denver is set for 8 PM.

Huskers Mauled By No. 8 Ohio State

As expected, Nebraska’s Big Ten debut under Tim Miles wasn’t pretty, and wasn’t close. The eighth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes manhandled the Huskers from start to finish in a 70-44 blowout in Columbus. The Buckeyes closed the first half on a 14-2 run and led 36-17 at the half, and things would only get worse for the Big Red, who trailed by as many as 31 points in the second 20 minutes. The Huskers were held to 30.4% shooting from the field and missed 15 of their 21 three-point attempts. Ray Gallegos was the only Husker to reach double-figures in scoring with 14 points. To make matters worse for Nebraska, starting center Andre Almeida left the game in the first half with an ankle injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for a while. The Huskers fall to 9-5 with the loss. They host Wisconsin Sunday afternoon.
