Husker Grappler Takes Home Big Ten Weekly Honor

Robert Kokesh

Sophomore Robert Kokesh earned Big Ten Co-Wrestler-of-the-Week accolades with Northwestern’s Jason Welch, the conference announced Wednesday.

Kokesh took home the Midlands Invitational title at 174 pounds on Sunday, winning six matches to extend his winning streak to 17 and improve his record to 22-1 on the season. The Wagner, S.D. native outscored his opponents 46-7 and added two pins to extend his number to eight on the season. He won two more of his matches by major decision and one by technical fall in addition to his pins.

Kokesh earned the 50th win of his collegiate career in Saturday’s quarterfinals and now has 52 as a Husker. He led the Nebraska wrestling team to a tie-for-15th place finish at the Midlands Invitational with the individual crown.

Kokesh was the last Husker to win Big Ten Wrestler of the Week when he took home the honor on Dec. 13, 2011.

Wednesday Sports Day – Ray Lewis, Greatest Linebacker of His Era, to Retire

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens say Ray Lewis will retire after the playoffs.

The star linebacker told the team “This will be my last ride.” He has been out since Oct. 14 with a triceps injury, but expects to play Sunday in the wild-card round against Indianapolis.

The 37-year-old Lewis says “It is time for me to create a new legacy” after 17 NFL seasons.

Lewis was the AP Defensive Player of the Year in 2000, when Baltimore won the Super Bowl title, and in 2003.

Back at the bargaining table

NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL has kicked the ball back to the players’ association in the form of another counteroffer as the sides search for labor peace.

The league’s proposal was presented last night in a 30-minute meeting that was delayed as the league worked on its response to the counteroffer the union made on Monday.

The NHL started this latest round of talks with a contract offer late last week.

Clippers face Warriors

UNDATED (AP) — There are 12 games on today’s NBA schedule, and the league is saving the best for last.

The Los Angeles Clippers head back onto the court less than 24 hours after their team-record 17-game winning streak ended in Denver. The loss dropped them into a virtual tie for the NBA’s best record, percentage points behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Clippers hadn’t lost since a 105-98 setback on Nov. 26 against the Hornets, who own the league’s third-worst record. L.A. is 25-7 overall and 11-4 on the road.

The Clippers have just one player among the NBA’s top 10 in scoring, rebounding or assists. Chris Paul is second in assists at over nine per game.

The Warriors own the fifth-best record in the Western Conference at 21-10 and are on a three-game winning streak. They’ve won 11 of their last 14, a streak that began with a 6-1 road trip last month.

Warriors forward David Lee is ninth in the league in scoring and tied for fifth in rebounds, while teammate Stephen Curry ranks 10th in scoring.

Another good matchup has the San Antonio Spurs visiting the Milwaukee Bucks. The Spurs have opened the season 25-8 and are chasing the Clippers and Thunder for the Western Conference lead. Spurs guard Tony Parker is among the league leaders in scoring and assists, averaging 19.3 points and 7.3 assists. The Bucks check in at 16-13, tying them for fifth in the East. Monta Ellis paces Milwaukee in scoring at 19.7 points a game.

The Thunder host the Brooklyn Nets, who won their first game under interim coach P.J. Carlesimo before getting blowing out by the Spurs 104-73 on New Year’s Eve. Oklahoma City has won three straight and is 24-6 overall, and 16-2 at home.

Memphis visits a Celtics team that limped back to Boston following three straight blowout losses on the West Coast. The Celtics’ current 14-16 record includes a 9-5 mark at home. The Grizzlies begin the day 19-9.

Houston is 17-14 heading into its game against the 7-23 Hornets.

Indiana is fourth in the East at 18-13 as the Pacers prepare to tip off against visiting Washington. The Wizards have dropped two straight and are last in the East at 4-25.

Orlando hosts the Chicago Bulls, who come off an embarrassing loss to Charlotte that ended the Bobcats’ 18-game losing streak. The Magic have dropped six in a row.

The Miami Heat will try to build on their East-leading 21-8 record when they host the Mavericks. Dallas ended a six-game skid with last night’s win at Washington.

Utah hosts the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are 14-13 overall but just 5-9 on the road.

The rest of the schedule has Sacramento at Cleveland, Portland in Toronto and Phoenix hosting Philadelphia.

Gators take on Cardinals

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The lone college football game of the day is the Sugar Bowl pitting fourth-ranked Florida against No. 22 Louisville.

The 11-1 Gators are making their 40th bowl appearance after a regular-season loss to Georgia cost them a shot at a national championship. They are seeking their school-record fifth straight bowl victory after finishing fifth in the nation in yards allowed and third in scoring defense. Their offense is led by running back Mike Gillislee, who’s rushed for over 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The 10-2 Cardinals are in their second BCS bowl game and are playing in the Sugar Bowl for the first time after winning the Big East crown. Teddy Bridgewater ranks eighth in the nation in pass efficiency and averages 287.7 yards passing. He’ll have to deal with a Florida defense that ranks first in pass defense efficiency.

Tuesday Sports Wrap – Unhappy New Year to the Big Ten… Again

Stanford gets first Rose Bowl win since ’72…Northwestern ends 64-year bowl drought

UNDATED (AP) — It took just five carries for Florida State fullback Lonnie Pryor to do some major damage against Northern Illinois at the Orange Bowl.

Pryor was named the game’s outstanding player after turning those five runs into a career-high 134 yards and two touchdowns in the Seminoles’ 31-10 win over the Huskies. He scored the first touchdown on a career-long 60-yard run, then ran 37 yards for a clinching touchdown with 10 minutes left. They were the two longest rushes allowed by Northern Illinois all season.

Senior EJ Manuel had 291 passing yards for the 13th-ranked ‘Noles, who finish 12-2 with their fifth consecutive bowl victory.

Florida State was playing in its first BCS bowl in 12 years, when they beat Virginia Tech for the national championship.

Northern Illinois ends the year 12-2 following their first BCS game appearance. The Huskies also ended a 12-game winning streak and slipped to 5-28 against top 25 teams.

Stanford’s Rose Bowl drought is over, while Wisconsin’s losing streak in the Granddaddy of Them All continues.

The eighth-ranked Cardinal won the game for the first time since 1972, capping a 12-2 season by allowing just 82 total yards in the second half of a 20-14 win over the Badgers. Stepfan Taylor and Kevin Hogan led the Stanford ground game by combining for 212 yards. Taylor ran for 89 yards and an early touchdown, and Hogan finished with a game-high 123 rushing yards for the Pac-12 champs.

Kelsey Young rushed for a touchdown on Stanford’s opening possession, and Taylor scored on the second.

Montee Ball rushed for 100 yards and his FBS-record 83rd touchdown for the Badgers, who lost the Rose Bowl for the third consecutive season.

Northwestern has won a bowl game for the first time since the Truman administration.

Winning their first bowl since the 1949 Rose Bowl, the 21st-ranked Wildcats snapped their nine-game bowl losing streak by beating Mississippi State 34-20 in the Gator Bowl. That had been college football’s longest postseason losing streak. It’s the first time the 10-3 Wildcats finished with double-digit victories since the 1995 season.

Quentin Williams returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game. Nick Vanhoose set up a late touchdown with a 39-yard interception return. Those plays were the difference in a back-and-forth game that featured seven interceptions and six touchdowns.

Mississippi State finished 8-4.

In other New Year’s Day bowls:

— Eleventh-ranked South Carolina captured the Outback Bowl by rallying past 19th-ranked Michigan 33-28. Dylan Thompson came off the bench to throw a 32-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds left to rally the Gamecocks, who finished 11-2.

— Clint Chelf threw three of Oklahoma State’s five touchdown passes and the Cowboys shook off a disappointing Big 12 finish by dominating Purdue 58-14 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. It was the biggest bowl win for Oklahoma State since coach Mike Gundy was the quarterback in a 62-14 rout of Wyoming in the 1988 Holiday Bowl. The Cowboys finished 8-5. Purdue wound up 6-7.

Blazers beat Knicks

UNDATED (AP) — Amare Stoudemire made his season debut on Tuesday, but his presence was of little help to the New York Knicks.

The Knicks wasted Carmelo Anthony’s season high-tying 45 points and lost to the visiting Portland Trail Blazers 105-100. Stoudemire finished with six points on 3-of-8 shooting and one rebound in 17 minutes off the bench in his return from knee surgery. Anthony shot 14 of 24 and nearly led the Knicks back from 19 points down after missing two games with a knee injury.

Nicolas Batum scored 26 points in the Trail Blazers’ third victory in four games. Damian Lillard had 21 points, six assists and five rebounds, and LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 14 rebounds for Portland.

The outcome leaves the Knicks a game behind East-leading Miami, and just a half-game ahead of Atlanta.

— The NBA schedule included the Hawks 95-86 victory over New Orleans. Josh Smith scored 10 of his 23 points in the third quarter, Al Horford finished with 20 points and Kyle Korver chipped in 14.

— Jrue (jroo) Holiday poured in 26 points and had 10 assists as Philadelphia knocked off the Los Angeles Lakers 103-99. Evan Turner also had a double-double with 22 points and 13 boards to help the 76ers overcome Kobe Bryant’s 36 points.

— The Dallas Mavericks have put an end to their six-game losing streak by rallying from a 14-point-first-half deficit to beat the Wizards 103-94 in Washington. Vince Carter scored 23 points for the Mavs, who trailed 39-25 before ending their losing losing streak in nearly 14 years.

— Detroit has its first three-game winning streak of the season after Greg Monroe contributed 18 points and 11 rebounds to a 103-97 triumph against Sacramento. DeMarcus Cousins had 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Kings.

AP source: Niners sign kicker Cundiff

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have signed kicker Billy Cundiff to compete with struggling veteran David Akers.

Cundiff was released by the Washington Redskins on Oct. 9 after missing 5 of his 12 field goal attempts. He worked out previously with the Niners on Nov. 27.

Akers made 44 of 52 attempts in his sensational 2011 season and first year with San Francisco, but he’s just 29 for 42 this year.

Woodson cleared for playoffs

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay defensive back Charles Woodson has been cleared to play in Saturday night’s playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Woodson deferred to team physician Dr. Pat McKenzie and gave his broken collarbone as much time to heal as possible, sitting out Sunday’s regular-season finale at Minnesota. He was injured on Oct. 21 and has missed nine consecutive games.

Governor says he plans to sue NCAA

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Tom Corbett says he plans to sue the NCAA in federal court over sanctions imposed against Penn State in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.

The Republican governor scheduled a news conference for Wednesday on Penn State’s campus in State College to announce the filing in U.S. District Court in Harrisburg.

The sanctions, agreed to by the university in July, included a $60 million fine that would be used nationally to finance child abuse prevention grants. State and federal lawmakers have raised objections to the money being spent outside Pennsylvania.

Red-Hot Hooper, No. 25 Huskers Host Badgers in Big Ten Opener

The 25th ranked Husker women’s basketball team opens Big Ten play tonight at the Devaney Center against Wisconsin. Nebraska went 10-3 in their non-conference schedule, finishing that slate with double-digit victories for the fourth straight season. They enter play tonight on a four-game winning streak, thanks in large part to the play of junior Jordan Hooper, who has averaged 27.8 points and 10 rebounds per game in that stretch. The visiting Badgers are 8-5, just one win shy of already equaling their total from last year. The Huskers won both meetings against Wisconsin last season and are 5-2 against the Badgers all-time. Tipoff tonight in Lincoln is set for 7:05.

Huskers Visit Buckeyes in First Big Ten Test

The Husker men’s basketball team begins their Big Ten schedule tonight, and they’ll start with one of the best teams in the nation’s best conference as they visit eighth-ranked Ohio State. Tim Miles’ charges made it through non-conference play with a 9-4 record. They have won three of their last four games, including a 68-59 win over Nicholls State last Saturday. The Buckeyes are 10-2 with their only losses coming to sixth-ranked Kansas and top-ranked Duke. Last season, Ohio State embarrassed the Huskers in two blowout wins, including a 70-41 drubbing in Columbus. Tonight’s game tips off at 5:30.

Nuggets End Clippers Winning Streak

The Denver Nuggets snapped the Los Angeles Clippers’ 17-game winning streak with a 92-78 victory at Pepsi Center last night. Six Nuggets scored in double figures, led by 17 points from Danilo Gallinari. Andre Miller had 12 points and 12 assists in a starting role at point guard, subbing for the injured Ty Lawson. Defensively, the Nuggets held the Clippers to 38.5% shooting in holding the Clippers to their second-lowest point total of the season. The Nuggets improve to 18-15 with the win. They host Minnesota Thursday night.

Broncos’ OC McCoy Drawing Interest Around NFL

After an eleven-game winning streak, a 13-3 season, and a top-seed in the AFC playoffs, its no surprise that Denver Broncos assistant coaches and staff are drawing interest from teams across the league with vacancies to fill. Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is a hot candidate for a head coaching gig, and Buffalo, Chicago and Arizona have already sought and received permission to interview McCoy. But the Broncos will not allow division rivals in San Diego to interview director of player personnel Matt Russell for their open GM position.

Bulldogs Pass By Huskers in Capital One Bowl

The Huskers put up a valiant fight against once of the SEC’s best, but Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray was too much for Nebraska’s beleaguered secondary. Murray gashed the Blackshirts for 427 yards and five touchdowns as the Bulldogs topped the Big Red 45-31 in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando. After a wildly entertaining first-half that saw the lead change hands three times, Nebraska appeared to have the momentum after a two-yard rushing touchdown by Rex Burkhead that gave them a 31-23 lead early in the third quarter. But Georgia would score the next 22 points unanswered, the capper coming on an 87-yard screen pass from Murray to Chris Conley. Burkhead’s final game as a Husker was a big one, as he rushed for 138 yards, caught four passes for 39 yards, and scored twice. The Huskers finish the 2012 season with a 10-4 record. It’s the fifth year in five under Bo Pelini that they’ve ended the year with four tallies in the loss column.

Broncos Finish Regular Season at the Top

Peyton Manning threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns Sunday to lift Denver to a 38-3 win over Kansas City that sealed the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs for the Broncos.

Manning finished the season with 4,659 yards, only 41 short of his career high. He finished with 37 touchdown passes, and none will be more memorable than the last two — circus catches by Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas that turned the game into a blowout.

Denver (13-3) won its 11th straight and leaped past Houston for the top seed after the Texans lost to Indianapolis 28-16 earlier in the day.

The Chiefs gained only 119 yards all day and finished their season 2-14. They will get the top pick in April’s draft.

Nuggets Take Down Mavs

Daniro Gallinari scored a career-high 39 points and the Denver Nuggets spoiled Dirk Nowitzki’s first home game since returning from knee surgery by beating the Dallas Mavericks 106-85 on Friday night.

Nowitzki had five points in 17 minutes in his third game back, and the Mavericks lost their fifth straight for the first time since January 2011.

Gallinari scored five points in the last 5.3 seconds before halftime and opened the second half with a 3-pointer to put the Nuggets up by 11. Andre Iguodala hit four 3-pointers in a 32-point third quarter and finished with 29 points.

O.J. Mayo led Dallas with 15 points
