Nuggets Dominate Lakers at Pepsi Center

Corey Brewer matched his career high with 27 points and the Denver Nuggets overcame a 40-point effort by Kobe Bryant to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 126-114 on Wednesday night for their seventh straight win at home.

Brewer hit four of his six 3-pointers in the final 12-plus minutes, helping the Nuggets hold off the Lakers, whose five-game winning streak was snapped.

Bryant, who hit 40 points for the 116th time in his career, has scored 30 or more points in 10 straight games.

Kenneth Faried had 21 points and 15 rebounds, and Danilo Gallinari added 19 points for Denver. Ty Lawson had 17 points to go with 14 assists, and Andre Iguodala also scored 17 points.

Manning, Bailey Among Several Broncos Selected for Pro Bowl

Quarterback Peyton Manning leads a list of four Denver Broncos who have been named to the AFC team for the upcoming Pro Bowl.

Manning missed all of the 2011 season with neck and back problems that required several operations. He then signed with Denver as a free agent and has led the Broncos on a 10-game winning streak to take the AFC West.

Defensive end Elvis Dumervil, linebacker Von Miller, cornerback Champ Bailey and tackle Ryan Clady are theBroncos‘ other Pro Bowl players.

Another comeback player of the year candidate to earn a Pro Bowl nod is Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson, who tore up his left knee on Christmas Eve last year. He’s currently the NFL’s leading rusher and needs 208 yards in the Vikings’ season finale to break Eric Dickerson’s league record.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is one of two rookies named to the Pro Bowl, with Minnesota kicker Blair Walsh being the other.

San Francisco had the most players selected, nine, including six from its second-ranked defense. Houston was next with eight, six on offense.

Other notables include New England quarterback Tom Brady, Green Bay signal-caller Aaron Rodgers, Detroit receiver Calvin Johnson, 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith and Houston defensive end J.J. Watt.

The Pro Bowl will be played in Honolulu on Jan. 27.

NU Basketball Player Cited for DUI and Leaving the Scene of an Accident

Nebraska men’s basketball player Deverell Biggs has been cited on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident in Omaha last weekend.

According to a police report, Biggs backed his Chevrolet Suburban into a Bellevue man’s vehicle about 1:35 a.m. Sunday. Biggs spoke briefly to the other driver and drove off.

Police stopped Biggs several miles away. His blood-alcohol content measured .134, over the legal limit of .08.

The 20-year-old Biggs also was cited for minor in possession and unsafe backing.

Biggs is sitting out as a redshirt junior this season.

Coach Tim Miles said in a text message Wednesday he’s “greatly disappointed in the report and Deverell’s actions.” No decision has been made on disciplinary action.

There was no answer on Biggs’ cell phone.

Former Braves Star Arrested for Battery

Jail records show that former Atlanta Braves star center fielder Andruw Jones is free on bond after being arrested in suburban Atlanta on a battery charge.

Gwinnett County Detention Center records say Jones was booked into the county jail around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday and had been released on $2,400 bond by 11 a.m.

No one was available at the Gwinnett County sheriff’s office to give details about the circumstances surrounding his Christmas Day arrest.

Once one of the premier players in the big leagues, Jones broke into the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 1996 and won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1998-07 as their center fielder. He has 434 career home runs over 17 seasons in the majors.

Jones signed a $3.5 million, one-year contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan’s Pacific League earlier this month.

Lebron’s Foul-Free Streak Ends

LeBron James’ foul-free streak is over.

The Miami Heat forward was called for a foul against Oklahoma City’s Serge Ibaka with 7:57 left in the first quarter of the teams’ NBA Finals rematch on Tuesday, marking the first time since Dec. 8 that James was whistled for a personal.

James went 254 minutes, 7 seconds of on-court time without being called for any personals, though was assessed one technical during that span for arguing a play where he thought he was fouled. He was called for backing into New Orleans’ Lance Thomas with 2:30 left in the first quarter of that game on Dec. 8.

His first foul on Tuesday came when he tried to block a dunk attempt by Ibaka, who made one of the two resulting free throws.

Nuggets Fall to Clippers

Jamal Crawford led a dominant performance by the Los Angeles reserves with 22 points and the Clippers defeated the Denver Nuggets 112-100 on Tuesday night, extending their franchise-record winning streak to 14 games.

Matt Barnes added 20 points — one off his season high — as the bench outscored the Clippers starters 64-48 in claiming the NBA’s best record at 22-6, one win better than Oklahoma City which lost to Miami earlier Tuesday.

Kosta Koufos and Jordan Hamilton scored 16 points each for Denver in the finale of a Christmas Day doubleheader at Staples Center. The Lakers, who play the Nuggets on Wednesday night in Denver, beat the Knicks 100-94 in the first game.

Ty Lawson added 15 points for the Nuggets, who fell to 7-13 on the road, where 22 of their first 32 games are being played.

Fox Sees Possible MVP in Manning’s Future

Rarely one to talk publicly about the big picture or much beyond winning the next game, Denver coach John Fox weighed in on the interesting race for Most Valuable Player.

That race could come down to Peyton Manning of the Broncos vs. old rival Tom Brady of the Patriots and Adrian Peterson of the Vikings.

“Obviously, I’m going to be a little biased,” Fox said Monday.

His vote, of course, would go to Manning, not so much, Fox says, for the numbers he’s put up as for the obstacles the quarterback has overcome — namely, a season off, four neck surgeries and the task of becoming Broncos quarterback after spending his entire career with the Colts.

3 Texas Tech Players Suspended for Meineke Car Care Bowl

A Texas Tech official says three Red Raiders won’t be playing against Minnesota in Friday’s Meineke Car Care Bowl because they violated team rules.

Football program spokesman Blayne Beal on Monday would not divulge the rules violated. He says Red Raiders starting defensive back Cornelius Douglas, Chris Payne, a linebacker who played mostly on Texas Tech’s special teams, and backup defensive tackle Leon Mackey won’t play in the bowl game.

The Red Raiders (7-5) take on the Gophers (6-6) about three weeks after Tommy Tuberville unexpectedly left to take the head coaching position at Cincinnati. Interim head coach Chris Thomsen, who handled the offensive line under Tuberville, will coach the bowl game.

Former Red Raiders standout quarterback Kliff Kingsbury was hired as Tuberville’s successor Dec. 12.

Broncos Roll Over Browns for 10th Straight Win

Denver won its 10th straight game Sunday as Peyton Manning threw three touchdown passes for the 72nd time of his career in a 34-12 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

Denver (12-3) pulled into a tie for first place in the AFC with Houston, which fell 23-6 to the Vikings.

Manning finished with 339 yards on 30-for-43 passing. Von Miller was in on two sacks for the Broncos, the second of which knocked Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden out of the game with a right shoulder injury.

Miller has 17 ½ sacks on the season, breaking Elvis Dumervil’s franchise record.

If Denver defeats Kansas City at home next week and Houston loses at Indianapolis, the Broncos would be the AFC’s top seed.

UTEP Defeats Huskers

Konner Tucker and Jaques Streeter had 17 points apiece to help UTEP defeat Nebraska 68-52 in the championship game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on Sunday night.

Nebraska (8-4) did not score until 13:31 into the first half. The Huskers then began to chip away at the lead when UTEP went cold for a 4-minute stretch but closed out the half going on a 16-5 run.

The second half was much of the same as UTEP (6-5) controlled the pace. Nebraska cut the lead to as little as eight with a 13-4 run late, but UTEP stayed ahead.

Nebraska shot 37.3 percent from the field for the game, while UTEP shot 47 percent and led by as many as 22 points.

Ray Gallegos led Nebraska with 22 points. Brandon Ubel had 11 points. Dylan Talley, who had averaged 15 points per game, was held to four points.
