Wednesday Sports Day – One Day After Son’s Funeral, Reid Back at Eagles Practice

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) – Andy Reid has returned to the Philadelphia Eagles a day after his 29-year-old son’s funeral.

Garrett Reid was found dead Sunday morning in his dorm room at Lehigh University where he was assisting the team’s strength and conditioning coach during training camp.

Andy Reid said Wednesday that coming back is “the right thing to do.” He plans to coach the preseason opener against Pittsburgh on Thursday night.

He said, “I’m a football coach. That’s what I do. My son wouldn’t want it any other way. He loved the Philadelphia Eagles.”

More than 900 people, including NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, general managers and coaches from other teams and current and former players, attended the funeral service Tuesday.

Reid says the outpouring of support from fans and people around the NFL was a “humbling” experience.

LONDON (AP) – Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade says his recovery from offseason knee surgery is going as planned, and he’s expecting to resume on-court workouts in September.

Wade told The Associated Press on Wednesday that “rehab is going very well.”

He had surgery on his left knee on July 9, after helping the Heat win the NBA championship despite being bothered by knee pain and swelling throughout the playoffs. The Heat will open training camp in late September. Wade said he expects to be fully ready to go when Miami opens the defense of its title against the Boston Celtics on Oct. 30.

Wade was in London on Wednesday in a promotional appearance at NBA House for Gatorade, one of his longtime sponsors.

Morgantown, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia football coach Dana Holgorsen will earn $2.3 million this season under a new six-year contract.

Athletic director Oliver Luck announced the agreement Wednesday. It includes $250,000 in base pay and the remainder in supplemental pay from athletic department revenue or private sources.

The second-year coach will receive annual raises of $200,000 in the second and third years and $100,000 in the fourth and fifth years.

The agreement also includes performance incentives for team academic achievements, regular-season victories, conference titles and postseason bowl appearances.

Terms of the contract are effective immediately. Holgorsen would have earned about $1.7 million this season under the previous contract.

Luck says Holgorsen’s contract is in line with salaries of other coaches in the Big 12 and major colleges.

Olympic Update – Day Thirteen

It’s an all-American affair in the women’s beach volleyball final today in London. Misty May-Treanor and Kelly Walsh Jennings have ruled the sport for the last decade, winning Olympic gold in 2004 and 2008. In what may be their Olympic swan song, they’ll face the other American duo in the tournament, Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, who shocked a heavily favored Brazilian team in the semifinals. Also tonight in prime time, you’ll see the women’s 200 meter dash, where Americans Carmelita Jeter and Allyson Felix hope to get on the podium while 400 meter gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross goes for another gold. You’ll also see the men’s 110 meter hurdles, where American Aries Merritt had the fastest first round time yesterday. The US men’s basketball team is four wins away from a gold medal. Their quarterfinal today pits them against Australia, a surprise qualifier that features former Husker star Aleks Maric.

Rockies Win Second Straight in LA (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

Another strong effort from the mound and a torrid performance from a rookie sensation propelled the Colorado Rockies to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night in Los Angeles. After four pitchers shut out the Dodgers on Monday on five hits, the Rockies used five pitchers in a four-hitter, with Josh Roenicke’s three innings of shutout relief earning him the victory. Offensively, rookie shortstop Josh Rutledge continued his hot hitting. He had four hits on the night, including three doubles, and drove in all three of Colorado’s runs. The series win for the Rockies at Dodger Stadium is a first since September of 2010. The Rockies will go for a rare road sweep of their division rivals tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 will have more late night baseball for you, with the pregame show at 8:30 and the first pitch at 9:10.

Husker Camp Update – Veteran Defensive Line Hopes to Improve on Disappointing 2011

LINCOLN, NE (AP) — First-year defensive coordinator John Papuchis says one of Nebraska’s top priorities is to shore up a line that has been underperforming. Opponents last season rushed for the second-most yards against the Cornhuskers since 1977, and Nebraska recorded its second-fewest sacks since the statistic was first officially tracked in 1981. Ends Cameron Meredith and Jason Ankrah and tackle Baker Steinkuhler have locked up three of the four starting jobs. With those three starting nine games together last season, Nebraska allowed an average of 158 yards on the ground to rank 64th nationally. That number ballooned to 176 yards against Big Ten opponents. Only 11 of the Huskers’ 21 sacks came in the eight conference games. Meredith said new line coach Rick Kaczenski is stressing the importance of playing aggressively.

Dumervil Avoids Criminal Charges Stemming From Road Rage Incident Last Month

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Pro Bowl defensive end Elvis Dumervil of the Denver Broncos won’t be charged in a road rage incident in Miami Beach, Fla.

His lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, said the Miami-Dade County state’s attorney informed him Tuesday that Dumervil had been cleared in the case. Dumervil had been arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

A relieved Dumervil said he knew he “didn’t do anything wrong” but was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The police report said Dumervil and another man were stuck in traffic on July 14, got into an argument with a female driver, and the two men displayed weapons. Dumervil told police he didn’t have a gun; officers say they found one in the car’s glove compartment.

Broncos Training Camp Update – Manning Gears Up For Debut and A Touching Gesture For a Teammate

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos are treating their visit to Chicago on Thursday night just like any other preseason opener.

Only, it isn’t.

This marks the four-time MVP’s first game of any sort since Jan. 30, 2011, when he went 2-for-5 for 12 yards and an interception in the AFC’s 55-41 loss to the NFC in the Pro Bowl.

Manning missed all of last season with a nerve injury in his neck that weakened his throwing arm and led to his release from Indianapolis, setting off the biggest free agent frenzy in NFL history.

He’s looked like the Manning of old ever since landing in Denver. Even on Tuesday, when he had several incompletions at practice against an ever-improving defense, Manning’s decision-making was sharp.

Elsewhere, several of Ben Garland’s teammates gathered around him after the Denver Broncos’ practice Tuesday morning and gave him two replacement silver sabers he received upon graduating from the Air Force Academy, along with a Falcons football helmet.

The originals were lost in the wildfire that destroyed his grandparents’ home in Colorado Springs this summer.

He was presented with the shiny swords by William “T” Thompson of the Association of Graduates at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Then, linebacker Joe Mays gave him a new college helmet, white with a blue lightning bolt.

Mays said the Broncos wanted to do something for Garland after all he went through.

Tuesday Sports Day – Dodge Set to Leave NASCAR

DETROIT (AP) – A person briefed on the matter says that Dodge is pulling out of its NASCAR sponsorship at the end of this season.

Chrysler, which owns the Dodge brand, has scheduled a conference call for Tuesday afternoon to announce the withdrawal.

The person did not know the reason for the decision. They did not want to be identified because the company hasn’t made any announcements yet.

Among the four manufacturers in the top racing series, Dodge is now in last place. Chevrolet is in first, followed by Toyota and then Ford.

Dodge’s long-term future in NASCAR had been subject to speculation after its flagship team, Penske Racing, announced it was moving to Ford next season.

ESPN reported on the move earlier Tuesday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon signed a four-year deal worth about $18.5 million and took part in his first practice at training camp.

Blackmon must have three days of non-contact practice before he’s allowed to put on full pads. Coach Mike Mularkey said after practice Tuesday that Blackmon will not play in the first preseason game Friday against the New York Giants.

Blackmon, the fifth pick in the NFL draft, missed the first 11 days of practice. He was the last of the 32 first-round picks to sign a contract.

Several days before camp opened, Blackmon pleaded guilty to an aggravated DUI charge that occurred in June in Stillwater, Okla.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma State center Phillip Jurick has been suspended indefinitely after he pleaded not guilty to charges that he possessed marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Coach Travis Ford announced Tuesday that Jurick will not travel with the Cowboys on their upcoming foreign tour in Spain and that a final decision on his status will be made when more information is obtained.

Jurick was charged Monday with counts of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charges Monday, and he was scheduled to appear again in court on Aug. 20.

Jurick played in 27 games and started 16 for Oklahoma State last season before injuries ended his season. The 6-foot-11 center averaged 1.6 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Monday Sports Wrap – Get Your Popcorn Ready, T.O. is Back in the NFL

UNDATED (AP) -Terrell Owens is coming back to the NFL after one year on the sidelines. Owens had a tryout with the Seahawks, who signed the 38-year-old receiver. He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2010. Owens then had surgery on his left knee and didn’t receive any offers to play last season.

UNDATED (AP) – The NFL calls a report it has offered a settlement and reduced suspension to Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma “completely inaccurate.”

Vilma has been suspended for the 2012 season for his role in the Saints bounty program, which he adamantly has claimed did not exist.

Citing anonymous sources, ESPN.com reported the league offered Vilma an eight-game suspension if he would drop his defamation lawsuit against NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

UNDATED (AP) – Three-time All Star Evan Longoria is set to return to Tampa Bay’s lineup tonight after being sidelined more three months with a partially torn left hamstring. He was batting .329 with four homers and 19 RBIs in 23 games before being injured on April 30.

Olympic Update – Day Twelve

Redemption is on the line for American Lolo Jones in the women’s 100 meter hurdles, one of the highest profile events in prime time tonight. Jones was the favorite in the event in Beijing in 2008 but hit one of the last hurdles and finished off the podium. She turned in the second-fastest first-round time yesterday and hopes to be able to go for gold today in London. Other track and field finals that will be shown in prime time are the men’s 1500 meters and the men’s high jump. The final gymnastics events are held today as well – the men’s high bar and parallel bars, and the women’s balance beam and floor exercise. Americans have medal chances in the women’s events – Jordyn Wieber competes on the floor, Gabby Douglas on the beam, and Aly Raisman in both events. USA women’s basketball and volleyball compete in quarterfinal matches today as well.

Rockies Blank Dodgers (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

The embattled Colorado Rockies pitching staff saw four members combine for a five-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles last night. Drew Pomeranz started the game and struck out seven in his four innings. Adam Ottavino worked the next three innings and earned the victory. Matt Belisle wriggled out of trouble in the eighth, and Rafael Betancourt worked a clean ninth for his 18th save. Carlos Gonzalez and Jordan Pacheco drove in the Rockies’ runs. Rockies manager Jim Tracy was ejected in the seventh inning after a play that was initially ruled a catch by center fielder Dexter Fowler was inexplicably overturned by the umpiring crew. The Rockies and Dodgers play game two of their three-game series tonight. Join ESPN Radio 1410 for some late night baseball, with pregame coverage at 8:30 and first pitch at 9:10.
