Iginla leads Colorado past Chicago 3-2

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Jarome Iginla’s second power-play goal with 32.9 seconds left lifted the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 victory over the slumping Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night.

Semyon Varlamov had 28 saves and Cody McLeod also scored for Colorado, which won four of its last five despite being eliminated from the postseason a week ago.

The Blackhawks rested captain Jonathan Toews and defenseman Duncan Keith after learning they were locked into the No. 3 seed in the Central Division. Minnesota’s loss to St. Louis earlier Saturday clinched a first-round matchup with Nashville. Chicago was 3-1 against the Predators, with two of those wins coming after regulation.

Avs Win 1-0 in Shootout; Jets Still Clinch Playoff Berth

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — The Winnipeg Jets clinched their first playoff spot in eight seasons Thursday night despite a 1-0 shootout loss to the Avalanche.

Ryan O’Reilly and Matt Duchene scored in the shootout, and Reto Berra stopped both Winnipeg shots. Berra finished with a season-high 41 saves, then stymied Blake Wheeler and Andrew Ladd in the shootout.

The Jets received help from Calgary to squeeze into the playoffs as a wild card when the Flames beat Los Angeles. The last time the franchise made the postseason was in 2006-07, when the team was the Atlanta Thrashers. The Jets are making their first playoff appearance since relocating to Winnipeg for the 2011-12 season.

Ondrej Pavelec had another brilliant night, stopping 21 shots through overtime. But O’Reilly beat him with a backhanded shot and Duchene followed with another.

Colorado did not make the playoffs this season.

Hishon lifts Avalanche to 3-2 Win over Struggling Predators

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Joey Hishon broke a third-period tie with his first NHL goal, Semyon Varlamov stopped 40 shots and the Colorado Avalanche beat Nashville 3-2 on Tuesday night to send the Predators to their fourth straight loss.

Calle Jarnkrok and Ryan Ellis had scored for the Predators, who remain a point behind St. Louis for the Central Division title with two games remaining. The Blues lost to Winnipeg 1-0 earlier.

Jarome Iginla and Ryan O’Reilly had goals 9 seconds apart in the second period for Colorado, which was eliminated from the playoff chase last week.

Hishon, playing in his 11th game since being recalled from Lake Erie of the AHL, split two Nashville defenders and beat Pekka Rinne with a wrist shot at 7:06 of the final period.

The Predators pulled Rinne with about 1:35 remaining, but they couldn’t get anything by Varlamov. Nashville dropped to 6-10-3 since Feb. 26.

LA Kings Beat Colorado 3-1, Keep Pace in Playoff Chase

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoLOS ANGELES (AP) — Alec Martinez scored the tiebreaking goal, Marian Gaborik added his 26th goal and the Los Angeles Kings kept pace in the playoff hunt with a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.

Dwight King also scored and Jonathan Quick made nine saves for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who have won five of seven to stay even with Winnipeg for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Ryan O’Reilly scored for the Avalanche, who were eliminated from playoff contention earlier Saturday when Winnipeg beat Vancouver. Colorado has lost three of four.

Wins by the Jets and the Kings kept the clubs even at 92 points apiece with four games to play, but the Kings hold the tiebreaker edge in non-shootout victories.

Avalanche Slim Playoff Hopes Alive with 4-2 Win over Ducks

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Matt Duchene scored the winning goal about halfway through the third period as the Colorado Avalanche kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night.

Duchene pulled in the puck after Corey Perry could not control it in the Avalanche zone and rocketed down the ice. Barely a step ahead of Sami Vatanen, Duchene beat John Gibson under the goalie’s left leg for his 21st of the season.

That goal keeps the Avalanche mathematically alive for another day, trailing the Los Angeles Kings by six points for the final berth with only four games remaining. The Avalanche play their final road game Saturday at the Kings.

Reto Berra overcame a shaky first period and made 35 saves for the Avalanche.

Sharks Beat Avalanche 5-1 to Boost Slim Playoff Hopes

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoSAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Scott Hannan and Chris Tierney scored goals to help the San Jose Sharks keep their slim playoff hopes alive with a 5-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night.

Patrick Marleau also scored and Logan Couture and John Scott added empty-net goals for the Sharks, who have won 13 straight regular-season home games against Colorado. Alex Stalock made 19 saves in his third straight start in place of sick starter Antti Niemi.

Matt Duchene scored a power-play goal for the Avalanche, who began a three-game road trip with a loss. Reto Barra made 25 saves.

The Sharks moved within five points of Winnipeg for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference with five games remaining.

Schultz, Bachman help Oilers to 4-1 Win over Avs

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Defenseman Justin Schultz broke a second-period tie and Richard Bachman stopped 29 shots, helping the Edmonton Oilers snap a five-game road losing streak by beating the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 on Monday night.

Brandon Davidson scored his first NHL goal, while Nikita Nikitin and Taylor Hall scored empty-net goals 32 seconds apart to help Edmonton capture its first game away from home since Feb. 24 at Minnesota. Andrew Miller added three assists.

Ryan O’Reilly scored for the Avalanche, who failed to gain ground as their postseason chances grew slimmer. They trail Winnipeg by eight points for the last wild-card spot in the Western Conference with six games remaining.

Duchene, Iginla Have 3 Points Each as Avs Beat Sabres 5-3

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Matt Duchene had a goal and two assists, Jarome Iginla had three assists and the Colorado Avalanche kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 5-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

John Mitchell scored for the second straight game, and Marc-Andre Cliche, Tyson Barrie and Brad Stuart also had goals as the Avalanche won their second in a row.

Colorado has gone 12-6-1 since losing four straight in early February, but the surge might not be enough. The Avalanche trail Winnipeg by eight points for the last wild-card slot with seven games remaining.

The Avalanche have won nine straight against Buffalo.

Andrej Meszaros had two goals and fellow defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen had a goal and an assist for the Sabres.

Derek Roy gets Tiebreaking Goal as Oilers beat Avalanche

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoEDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Derek Roy scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and the Edmonton Oilers recovered after giving up a three-goal lead and held on to beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Martin Marincin, Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall all scored in the first 9:36 of the game for the Oilers, who have won two of their last three games. Ben Scrivens stopped 31 shots.

Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay scored in the second period, and Ryan O’Reilly tied it early in the third for the Avalanche, who have lost three in a row and are 10 points out of playoff spot with just nine games remaining.

Semyon Varlamov allowed three goals on the first seven shots he faced before getting pulled in favor of Reto Berra, who finished with 26 saves.

Bouma, Jones lead Flames to 3-2 Win over Avalanche

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoCALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Lance Bouma and David Jones had a goal and an assist each to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night.

Jiri Hudler also scored for the Flames, and Kari Ramo made 25 saves to earn his 15th win of the season.

Calgary held onto third place in the Pacific Division, ahead of the Los Angeles Kings, who won at New Jersey earlier Monday.

Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, and Semyon Varlamov finished with 23 saves. Alex Tanguay also scored, and Ryan O’Reilly added two assists.
