Perry’s Goal Wins it for Ducks, 3-2 in OT over Avalanche

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Corey Perry scored the winner as the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in overtime on Friday night to sweep their three-game homestand.

Perry corralled the puck after Sami Vatanen knocked it out of the Ducks’ zone and raced down the ice before sending it past Semyon Varlamov 1:25 into the extra period, securing another dramatic late-game victory.

The Ducks are now 29-1-7 in games decided by one goal this season.

Frederik Andersen stopped 38 shots for the Ducks, picking up his second win in four starts since suffering a neck injury in February.

Varlamov made 37 saves, as the Avalanche’s streak of four consecutive road wins came to an end.

Iginla’s 23rd Goal Helps Avalanche Top Coyotes 5-2

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoGLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Ryan O’Reilly and Jarome Iginla scored 29 seconds apart in the first period, Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-2 on Thursday night for their third straight win.

Freddi Hamilton added his first NHL goal, and Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog also scored for the Avalanche, who won for the 11th time in 15 games to remain seven points behind Calgary for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored twice for the Coyotes, who have dropped four straight and 16 of 17.

Arizona’s Louis Domingue stopped 24 shots in his third NHL start in an intriguing matchup against his former juniors coach, Colorado’s Patrick Roy. The Hall of Fame goalie last year blamed a 2012 playoff series loss on Domingue, who replied Roy was “one of the worst people I’ve ever met.”

Varlamov helps Avalanche beat Flames 3-2

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Alex Tanguay and Ryan O’Reilly scored 1:47 apart in the second period, Semyon Varlamov stopped 29 shots and the Colorado Avalanche held off the Calgary Flames 3-2 on Saturday night.

John Mitchell added another goal for the Avalanche, who went 2-1 on a three-game homestand to remain in the playoff chase. They have a few days off before embarking on a five-game trip.

Varlamov remains unbeaten in his last five starts. He made a crucial stop in the waning seconds to secure the win for Colorado.

David Jones and Lance Bouma scored for the Flames. Karri Ramo made 23 saves as he filled in for Jonas Hiller, who played the night before in a 6-3 win against Toronto. Calgary is 5-2-1 and holding onto a playoff spot after losing top defenseman Mark Giordano for the season because of a torn biceps tendon.

McNabb, Quick lift Kings to 5-2 Win over Avalanche

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Brayden McNabb had a goal and two assists, Jonathan Quick stopped 21 shots and the Los Angeles Kings beat Colorado 5-2 on Tuesday night to end the Avalanche’s three-game win streak.

Marian Gaborik, Jeff Carter, Kyle Clifford and Jake Muzzin also scored as the reigning Stanley Cup champions crept closer to playoff contention with 16 games remaining.

Tyson Barrie and Alex Tanguay scored for the Avalanche, who dropped the first contest in a pivotal three-game homestand as their postseason aspirations dwindle.

Rookie goaltender Calvin Pickard filled in after Semyon Varlamov injured his groin over the weekend. Pickard’s night didn’t last long, with the Kings scoring three early goals and chasing him from the game at 14:15 of the first period. Reto Berra took over the rest of the way.

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche will sit goaltender Semyon Varlamov on Tuesday night against Los Angeles after he injured his groin over the weekend.

Coach Patrick Roy confirmed after the morning skate that rookie Calvin Pickard will take Varlamov’s place in net.

Varlamov has started 22 straight games, one away from matching Craig Anderson’s mark for most consecutive starts by an Avalanche goaltender set in 2010.

In a win Sunday at Minnesota, Varlamov appeared to hurt his groin. Earlier this season, Varlamov missed 15 games due to the groin. He also took a puck off his shoulder area against the Wild, but Roy said that wasn’t an issue.

Varlamov tested out the groin Tuesday morning. Roy said “it doesn’t hurt him, but he doesn’t feel like it’s solid enough to take a chance.”

Varlamov Stops 29 Shots as Avalanche beat Wild, 3-2

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Semyon Varlamov stopped 29 shots, Zach Redmond had a goal and an assist, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Minnesota Wild 3-2 on Sunday night.

Cody McLeod and Gabriel Landeskog also scored for Colorado, which won its third straight.

Chris Stewart and Thomas Vanek both scored late for the Wild, and Devan Dubnyk had 18 saves in his 24th straight start for Minnesota. The Wild had won five straight.

Varlamov — who had a season-high 44 saves Saturday night in Columbus — has stopped 100 of the 102 shots he’s faced the past three games. He had allowed 11 goals in the previous three games, including a physical 3-1 loss to the Wild last week. McLeod and Landeskog were each fined for roughing up Wild players in that game.

Early Goals, Varlamov’s 44 Saves lift Avs past CBJ, 4-0

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Jarome Iginla, Gabriel Landeskog and Matt Duchene scored in the first 10 minutes, and Semyon Varlamov made 44 saves to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-0 victory over Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night.

The shutout was Varlamov’s fifth of the season and the 18th of his NHL career. Three have come against the Blue Jackets.

Alex Tanguay had a goal and an assist, and Tyson Barrie had three assists for the Avalanche, who played their first game without last season’s rookie of the year, Nathan MacKinnon. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 draft broke a bone in his foot blocking a shot and is unlikely to play again this season.

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche will be without Nathan MacKinnon for at least six weeks after the speedy forward broke his foot, the team announced Friday.

The talented teenager could possibly return to the ice this season if the Avs make the playoffs. Colorado is currently outside of the Western Conference postseason picture.

No further details were provided by the team.

MacKinnon has 14 goals and 24 assists in his sophomore season. He had 63 points a year ago when he was the rookie of the year.

It’s been a tumultuous past few days for the 19-year-old MacKinnon. He broke his nose against Minnesota last Saturday, forcing him to wear a longer shield in a win over Pittsburgh on Wednesday. He scored a goal with his skate in that contest.

Landeskog leads Avs to 3-1 Win over Penguins

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and two assists, Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves, and the Colorado Avalanche beat Pittsburgh 3-1 on Wednesday night to halt the Penguins’ four-game winning streak.

Jarome Iginla scored 13 seconds into the second period and Nathan MacKinnon, wearing a shield to protect his broken nose, added a goal with his skate for Colorado on a night when Alex Tanguay played in his 1,000th NHL game.

Evgeni Malkin scored the lone goal for the Penguins. The Avalanche are 16-5-6 against Pittsburgh since moving to Denver in 1995-96.

Varlamov played in his 20th straight game and improved to 10-8-2 during the streak. He stymied Sidney Crosby and Malkin — two of the NHL’s top scorers — for most of the game, before allowing Malkin’s goal off a rebound midway through the third period.

Fontaine, Dubnyk Help Wild to 3-1 Win over Avalanche

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Justin Fontaine broke a second-period tie, and Devan Dubnyk stopped 33 shots, leading the Minnesota Wild to a 3-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.

Erik Haula and Jason Pominville also scored for the Wild, who improved to 4-0 against Colorado this season. They have outscored the Avalanche 12-1.

Dubnyk started his 20th straight game since joining the Wild in a trade with Arizona on Jan. 15 and improved to 15-3-1. The consecutive starts match the Wild goalie record set by Niklas Backstrom in 2009.

Maxime Talbot had a goal in a game that had big playoff ramifications for the Avalanche.

Semyon Varlamov started his 19th straight game and fell to 9-8-2 during the stretch.
