Xavier Edges past Creighton 74-73

Creighton-Jays-BasketballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Dee Davis was sent to the line with four seconds remaining and knocked down both free throws to edge Xavier past Creighton 74-73 on Saturday.

After both teams traded turnovers, Devin Brooks got a tip-in for a one-point Bluejays lead with seven seconds left, the first since midway through the second half.

Austin Chatman fouled Davis with 6.3 seconds remaining, Davis made both, and Chatman’s final shot from 25 feet out hit the front of the rim to end it.

Davis finished with four points, while Matt Stainbrook scored a career-high 26 points. The sixth-seeded Musketeers (19-12, 9-9) will face No. 3 seed Butler in the Big East tournament on Thursday.

Chatman scored 18 points and James Milliken 17 for the Bluejays, whose last four losses have been by four points or less. Tenth-seeded Creighton (13-18, 4-14) will face seventh-seeded DePaul on Wednesday in the tournament.

Arcidiacono Saves No. 4 ‘Nova in 76-72 Victory over Bluejays

Creighton-Jays-BasketballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Ryan Arcidiacono converted a three-point play to give No. 4 Villanova the lead in the last minute and came up with the game’s final rebound, allowing the Wildcats to turn back Creighton’s upset bid and win its 11th straight game, 76-72 on Tuesday night.

Austin Chatman’s 3-pointer pulled the Bluejays within 74-72 with 6 seconds left, and Creighton got the ball back after Arcidiacono ran into Chatman as Villanova tried to inbound. Will Artino missed what would have been the tying layup, and Arcidiacono grabbed the ball, got fouled and made the free throws.

Arcidiacono finished with 23 points and Dylan Ennis matched his career high with 19 for the Wildcats (28-2, 15-2 Big East), who trailed by nine points in the first half.

Chatman scored 21 points to lead the Bluejays (13-17, 4-13), who lost for the seventh time when leading in the final minute.

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — James Milliken scored 18 points, helping coach Greg McDermott win his 400th game as Creighton beat DePaul 75-62 on Tuesday night.

Creighton led by as many as 13 in the first half, but DePaul roared back in the second frame, cutting its deficit to two on a Forrest Robinson 3-pointer with 6:57 left. That turned out to be the Blue Demons’ last gasp, however. The Bluejays strung together a 14-6 scoring stretch over the next 5:27, highlighted by a Milliken jumper and an Austin Chatman 3-pointer, to extend their lead back to 10 to put the game away.

Chatman added 12 points for the Bluejays (13-15, 4-11 Big East), who have won 27 straight when scoring 70 or more points including 9-0 this season.

Robinson led DePaul (12-17, 6-10) with 14 points. The Blue Demons have lost five straight and seven of eight.

McDermott is 400-248 in his 21st season as a head coach. His son Doug McDermott, the 2014 National Player of the Year and currently a rookie with the Chicago Bulls, was in attendance.

Creighton-Jays-BasketballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Roosevelt Jones made the winning layup with 1.9 seconds to lift No. 19 Butler to a 58-56 win over Creighton and avoid getting upset by the Big East’s last-place team Monday night.

The Bulldogs (19-7, 9-4) wouldn’t have been in position for Jones’ game-winner if Alex Barlow hadn’t scrambled to rebound Kellen Dunham’s missed shot a few seconds earlier. Devin Brooks missed Creighton’s last-second 3-pointer.

Dunham scored 19 points, Jones added 18 and Kameron Woods 10 for the Bulldogs, who were playing without the injured Andrew Chrabascz.

Austin Chatman and Brooks had 17 points apiece to lead Creighton (12-15, 3-11).
