Huskers Cruise to 36-6 Win Over Jackrabbits

UNLBrookings, S.D. – The No. 11 Nebraska wrestling team won nine weight classes en route to a 36-6 victory over South Dakota State at Frost Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Head Coach Mark Manning picked up his 200th career victory.

No. 15 Tim Lambert opened the dual with a 9-1 major decision over the Jackrabbits’ Isaac Andrade. After a first-period takedown for Nebraska’s 125-pounder, Lambert added a reversal in the second period and two takedowns in the third period.

Newcomers Colton McCrystal (133) and Anthony Abidin (141) continued Nebraska’s momentum by each notching decisions. McCrystal, a true freshman, defeated Brance Simms of South Dakota State, 8-3, before Abidin took down Eric Orozco, 9-3.

No. 6 Jake Sueflohn (149) extended the lead to 14-0 with his 13-0 major decision over Alex Kocer before Nebraska suffered its first loss of the dual. At 157 pounds, John Svoboda was pinned by the Jackrabbits’ Cody Pack in 4:47, but the Huskers took a 14-6 lead into the halfway break.

Nebraska responded at 165 pounds as Austin Wilson grinded out a 6-2 decision over Joe Brewster. Wilson took a 2-1 lead after a first-period takedown and held the same advantage after the second period. Wilson added an additional takedown in the third period and earned a riding time point for the final score.

Junior Robert Kokesh, a Wagner, S.D. native, led from start to finish before pinning John Nething II in 6:53. Kokesh, the No. 4 wrestler in the country at 174 pounds, improves to 7-0 on the season.

At 184 pounds, TJ Dudley earned a 9-1 major decision over Ben Schwery. Dudley improves to 8-1 with the win and earned his third major decision of the season.

Spencer Johnson won at 197 pounds before Collin Jensen earned a pin at heavyweight to close out the dual. Johnson posted a 6-2 decision over Trey Hable, while Jensen, a Mobridge, S.D. native, earned his pin in 1:43.

The Huskers return to the mat on Saturday at the Stanford Duals in Stanford, Calif. Nebraska will face Utah Valley at 1 p.m. CT before taking on Stanford at 2:45 p.m. and CSU-Bakersfield at 4:30 p.m.

Webster Fuels Nebraska’s 73-65 Win

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballCHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Tai Webster scored 13 of his 14 points in the second and Nebraska rallied to take seventh place at the Charleston Classic with a 73-65 victory over Georgia on Sunday.

The Cornhuskers (4-2) had watched close games slip away their first two days in the eight-team tournament and were trailing the Bulldogs 51-48 with under 10 minutes left. That’s when Webster led Nebraska on a 23-13 run to close the game and avoid a 0-for-3 trip to South Carolina’s coast.

Webster had seven points in the charge, including a 3-pointer with 7:44 left that put the Cornhuskers up for good.

Georgia got within a point after Marcus Thornton’s basket a possession later, but Webster followed with two foul shots and the Bulldogs got no closer. Georgia opened 1-4 for the second straight season. Charles Mann scored 16 points to lead the Bulldogs.

Terran Petteway had 15 points to top Nebraska.

Smith Kicks Nebraska Past Penn State, 23-20 in OT

nebraska_helmetSTATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — With one final kick, Pat Smith was swooped up and off for a ride on the shoulders of his Nebraska teammates.

He made the clutch kicks that Penn State’s Sam Ficken failed to make — and got the win, to boot.

Smith kicked a 42-yard field goal on Nebraska’s first possession in overtime to lift the Cornhuskers to a 23-20 win over Penn State on Saturday night.

He sent the game into OT with a tying field goal late in regulation, then had a 37-yarder in OT called back on a false start. Smith had no trouble with 5 extra yards, giving the Huskers (8-3, 5-2 Big Ten) their third win in four games.

“This is what you dream about. This is the reason I came to Nebraska,” Smith said. “It’s really unbelievable. This is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. A lot of guys have been asking me, were you nervous. I was pumped up; these are the moments you live for.”

Ficken, who missed an extra point in regulation, missed a 37-yard field-goal attempt to open overtime. The Nittany Lions (6-5, 3-4) lost for the first time in three home OT games this season.

The Huskers could have won the game late in the fourth after Ameer Abdullah, who rushed for 147 yards, sprinted for a 60-plus yard touchdown run. But wide receiver Sam Burtch was flagged for a personal foul, wiping out the go-ahead score. Nebraska chewed more time off the clock and settled for Smith’s tying 19-yard field goal.

“It was tough out there today,” he said. “It was cold and windy and late in the game. You never know; you can leave it short.”

Not a chance.

Christian Hackenberg, who threw two touchdowns and ran for a score, gave Penn State a short-lived 20-17 lead when he found James down the sideline for a 46-yard TD pass on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Nittany Lions, who beat Michigan and Illinois in OT, couldn’t send the senior class out winners in the home finale.

Hackenberg hit Robinson in the second half for a 43-yard gain, perhaps the last big home-game gain for the junior wide receiver. A semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Robinson holds Penn State single-season records for catches and yards and has put himself in prime position to be a first-round pick in the NFL draft. He has said he will wait until after the season to discuss his future.

Hackenberg threw an interception two plays later and Nebraska converted the turnover into a field goal for a 17-13 lead.

Turnovers and wasted plays on both sides defined this one.

Ron Kellogg III was stripped deep in Nebraska’s own territory, and defensive end C.J. Olaniyan was there to recover the fumble. Hackenberg quickly capitalized, fooling everyone on a fake handoff, then sprinting to his right and into the end zone for a 13-7 lead.

Snow was swirling, the band was playing, and the students who braved the cold were going wild.

Kenny Bell sucked the enthusiasm out of Beaver Stadium with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 14-13 lead. Purdue’s Raheem Mostert had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week. PSU coach Bill O’Brien said he planned no changes to the special teams unit, and Nebraska made PSU pay.

“We’ll continue to work hard in special teams,” O’Brien said. “They’re good kids working hard.”

Kellogg got the chance to lead the Huskers in the first after Tommy Armstrong Jr. was forced out with an ankle injury. Kellogg completed four straight passes, including a 27-yard TD pass to Quincy Enunwa early in the second quarter for a 7-6 lead.

“I thought Ron did some really good things out there today. There were some really tough conditions,” coach Bo Pelini said. “He provides great leadership. He obviously made some mistakes, but he did some good things.”

With leading rusher Bill Belton out with strep throat and a bad shoulder, the Nittany Lions gave the bulk of the carries to Zach Zwinak. He carried six straight times on Penn State’s third drive and that put the ball on Nebraska’s2. Hackenberg hit Adam Breneman for the short TD pass and the 6-0 lead.

Ficken’s point-after hit the upright and was no good, a costly miss that helped the Huskers keep the 7-6 lead at halftime.

Zwinak finished with 149 yards rushing. Robinson had eight catches for 106 yards.

The harsh penalties the NCAA levied against the program in 2012 in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal included a four-year bowl ban and scholarship cuts. The NCAA gave players an out — they could leave if they wanted without having to worry about transfer rules and play right away.

In the end, 10 players transferred, though more than 90 percent of the team stayed.

The bulk of this year’s class stuck it out, a group of players that impressed O’Brien daily with its work ethic, strong bond with the coaching staff, and ability to embrace a leadership role when the program needed them the most.

The seniors ran through a tunnel of teammates and greeted their families at midfield. They earned a video tribute that said the players, “led by your commitment, led by your loyalty, by your actions, led by example.”

“This senior class has a special place in Penn State history,” O’Brien said. “They stuck with this team in a very tough time.”

A double-block from Robinson and Keil distanced the Huskers at 15-12, while a kill from Robinson and an error by IU put NU up 22-20. A double-block from Keil and Morgan Broekhuis gave the Huskers their first lead of the set at 20-19, as NU completed the second-set comeback with a 25-21 win.

Robinson notched five kills in the second set, while Keil had two kills of her own. Nebraska hit .233 for the set, as Indiana hit .136. Both teams had 16 digs, while NU out-blocked IU 5-2.

Robinson posted five kills in the final set. Nebraska hit .700 and didn’t have a hitting error in the set. Indiana hit .000.

Nebraska hits the road again this week as the Huskers will travel to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Nebraska (3-2) looks to snap a two-game losing streak, as the Huskers fell to UMass (96-90) and UAB (87-74) during the first two days of tournament action. The Huskers have averaged 82 points per game in Charleston, but have struggled on the defensive end, allowing both UMass and UAB to shoot over 50 percent from the field.

In Friday’s loss, Nebraska was unable to stop UAB point guard Chad Frazier, who finished with 32 point and seven assists, as the Blazers made 19-of-23 second-half shots to overcome a six-point second-half deficit.

Sophomore Terran Petteway continued his solid play in Friday’s loss, as he totaled a team-high 21 points and five rebounds. Pettway, who had a career-high 30 points in Nebraska’s loss to UMass on Thursday, is averaging 25.5 points per game in Nebraska’s two games Charleston and is among the Big Ten scoring leaders at 17 points per game.

While Petteway has paced the Husker attack, Nebraska’s bench has been vital during tournament play. The Huskers are getting 29 points per game off the bench this week, including 10.0 points per game from junior

college transfer Deverell Biggs.

Georgia (1-3) suffered a tough loss of its own on Friday night, falling to Temple, 83-81, as Temple guard Will Cummings hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left. The Bulldogs had fought back from 13 points down to take an 81-80 lead from a basket from Charles Mann. The 6-5 sophomore guard leads Georgia in scoring at 17.0 points per game and is shooting 54 percent from the field and 86 percent from the foul line.

After this weekend, the Huskers will not leave the state until after Christmas, as Nebraska will play its next five games inside the state with only the Dec. 8 contest with nationally ranked Creighton away from Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Kadie Rolfzen gave NU the lead again at 23-22, but the Boilermakers would not let up and went on to win the first set 26-24.

The two teams came out battling in the second set as Kelly Hunter came in to serve an ace and tie the set at 7-7. Two consecutive kills from Robinson made it 16-14, Nebraska, and forced Purdue to use a timeout. The Boilermakers strung together another 3-0 run to go up 20-17, as the Huskers went on a 3-0 run of their own to cut into the Boilermaker lead at 23-21. Huskers’ Historic Season Ends in NCAA Second Round

huskersoccerLincoln – The most successful season for the Nebraska soccer program in over a decade came to an end on Friday as the No. 10 Huskers were eliminated in the NCAA Tournament Second Round by Boston College, 4-1, at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

NU finishes the 2013 campaign with a 19-4-1 mark, its highest win total since 2000. Seniors Jordan Jackson, Ari Romero, Emma Stevens, Kylie Greischar, Stacy Bartels and Maritza Hayes all completed their Nebraska playing careers on Friday and will leave Head Coach John Walker’s program as two-time Big Ten Champions after a season that put Nebraska back on the national radar.

Junior Mayme Conroy notched the lone score for the Big Red in the 85th minute as sophomore Jaylyn Odermann set her up from 30-yards out for a header in the box that found the back of the net. Conroy’s tally was her 11th of the year and 26th career.

Boston College (12-9-1) forced Nebraska into allowing 30 shot attempts, including 11 on net both of which are season highs for an NU opponent. Sophomore Katie Kraeutner led the Huskers with three shots on the left side as the team amassed 12 for the match with six coming on target.

Seven Nebraska outfield players worked at least 80 minutes in the contest, while Ari Romero worked every second for the 15th consecutive match as she finished her successful NU career.

The contest was fairly even with both sides controlling possession throughout the first 20 minutes of action. In the 25th minute, a dribble down the right end line for BC freshman Hayley Dowd resulted in a shot from a tough angle that found the top far corner of the goal for the early 1-0 lead.

An early second-half chance for the Huskers came from Jaycie Johnson whose shot was stopped by the opposing keeper Alex Johnson to keep momentum on Boston College’s end. Johnson recorded two of NU’s six shots on goal in the match.

Scores in the 74th, 82nd and 87th minutes guided the Eagles to victory as they will take on Illinois who stunned Portland by a 4-3 decision in overtime after a late penalty kick forced extra time.

Stevens wraps up her Nebraska career as the program leader in saves with 278, while tying for most starts in goal with 69. The Corona, Calif. native is also second in games played in net (72) and minutes (6,221), while ranking third in wins (37) and sixth in shutouts. Jackson sits fourth in shots (271) and fifth in shots on goal (136) as well as tied for eighth in points (101) and 10th in game-winning goals (9) all-time at NU.

Huskers Hit the Road for Clash with Jackrabbits

UNLThe No. 11 Nebraska wrestling team (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) heads to Brookings, S.D. for its first road dual of the season against South Dakota State at Frost Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.

The Huskers are making their second trip to South Dakota this season after appearing in the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Nov. 3. Three Huskers won individual titles at the tournament, including South Dakota natives Robert Kokesh (Wagner) and Collin Jensen (Mobridge). Kokesh is projected to start at 174 pounds this weekend and Jensen could see time at heavyweight against the Jackrabbits.

Head Coach Mark Manning, who is in his 14th season at Nebraska, is also a South Dakota native. Manning hails from Vermillion and will be going for his 200th career victory on Sunday afternoon.

Nebraska looks to continue its momentum from a 25-16 triumph over then-No. 19 Northwestern in the season-opening dual at the Devaney Center. Newcomers Colton McCrystal (133) and Anthony Abidin (141) along with redshirt freshman Tim Lambert (125) helped the Huskers jump out to an early 9-0 lead against the Wildcats before reigning All-Americans Kokesh (won by forfeit) and James Green (157) added bonus points to secure the victory. Redshirt freshman TJ Dudley (184) added a pin in his first dual for the Huskers.

Lambert, McCrystal and Abidin are all projected to start at their respective weight classes following close victories. Junior Jake Sueflohn (149) looks to rebound from back-to-back losses this weekend against South Dakota State’s Alex Kocer.

Green and Kokesh will start at 157 and 174 pounds, respectively, as Dudley has earned the spot at 184 pounds. Sophomore Austin Wilson is expected to start at 165 pounds following a loss against Northwestern.

Junior Spencer Johnson is projected to start for NU at 197 pounds after a third-place finish at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open last weekend. Johnson pinned four of his opponents in Ames, Iowa.

At heavyweight, Nebraska could start either Jensen or Nyle Bartling. Jensen is 4-0 this season and Bartling is 3-3.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with South Dakota State, 18-16-2. Last season the Huskers won eight matches against the Jackrabbits to post a 32-7 victory at the NU Coliseum. NU earned bonus points from Green, Kokesh, Skylar Galloway, Caleb Kolb and then-senior Josh Ihnen. Nebraska holds a 10-dual win streak over South Dakota State, dating back to 1982.

Sunday’s dual can be tracked on Twitter by following @HuskerWrestling.

Frazier’s 32 Lead UAB to 87-74 Victory over Nebraska

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballCHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Chad Frazier scored 32 points and UAB bounced back from a double-overtime defeat to No. 19 New Mexico with an 87-74 victory over Nebraska at the Charleston Classic on Friday.

Frazier reached the 30-point level for a second straight game, notching a career-high 34 in the 97-94 loss to the Lobos. UAB (4-1) will face either Georgia or Temple in Sunday’s fifth-place game.

Nebraska (3-2) will try and avoid an 0-3 run in the eight-team tournament against the Georgia-Temple loser.

If any team had a right to be winded and worn out, it was the Blazers who held leads in the final minute of regulation and overtime before losing their tournament opener. But UAB broke open a game tied at 50-all with a 25-17 run.

Fahro Alihodzic scored 16 points while Rod Rucker had 13 points and 10 rebounds for UAB.

Terran Petteway led Nebraska with 21 points.
