Huskers Finish Preparing for Penn State

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team concluded its preparations for Penn State by practicing for 90 minutes at the Hawks Championship Center on Thursday.

Head Coach Bo Pelini spoke to the media after practice and said he was pleased with the week overall.

“I thought we finished up well today,” Pelini said. “I liked the tempo today. I liked the energy. It will be a game-time decision with some of the guys up front. It’s kind of like last week as far as who’s injured and who’s going to play on the offensive line. We’ll go from there. I think our guys are looking forward to going out there and playing.”

With the Huskers banged up along the offensive line, the head coach discussed the development of sophomore guards Givens Price and Ryne Reeves. Pelini said both players have made excellent strides in recent weeks and are headed for bright futures in the Nebraska program.

“(Givens) has practiced well,” Pelini said. “He’s getting better. I think he’s had a good couple weeks. I think his confidence is growing. He’s excited. He has great energy. They’re just young but I’ve liked the way they’ve practiced the past couple weeks. I think it’s a work in progress with Givens but he’s a prideful kid. It’s important to him. He plays hard. He does the right things on and off the field.”

Pelini did say that receiver Jamal Turner will be part of the 70-man travel roster for the trip to Penn State. Turner has missed the past three games with a leg injury, but hopes to return to action on Saturday in State College. Pelini added that fellow receiver Taariq Allen could also be a factor in Saturday’s matchup.

“We have confidence in Taariq,” Pelini said. “I think his legs are getting more underneath him again. He came back so early that he was way ahead of schedule when he came back from his rehab. We thought it would be about right this time that he would be 100 percent. It’s almost on cue what our trainers said. It’s played out that way. I think he’s starting to feel better and he’s confident.”

The Huskers and Nittany Lions kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday and can be watched on the Big Ten Network.

Nebraska-Penn State Preview Capsule

nebraska_helmetNebraska (7-3, 4-2 Big Ten) at Penn State (6-4, 3-3), 3:30 p.m. EST (Big Ten Network)

Line: Penn State by 2.

Series Record: Nebraska leads 8-7.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

Nebraska is out of the Big Ten race after losing to Michigan State last week and is now jockeying for the best possible bowl. For Penn State, it’s Senior Day, and the Nittany Lions can assure themselves a winning record before they go to Wisconsin to finish the season next week.

KEY MATCHUP

Penn State WR Allen Robinson vs. Nebraska secondary. The semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award leads the Big Ten with a school-record 81 catches and better than 120 yards a game. CB Stanley Jean-Baptist, who matches Robinson’s height of 6-foot-3, probably will spend most of the afternoon assigned to Robinson. This should be fun to watch.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Nebraska: QB Tommy Armstrong Jr. The question is how the redshirt freshman will respond after he committed three of his team’s five turnovers in the loss to Michigan State. He was able to survive at Michigan Stadium two weeks ago, so the atmosphere at 106,000-seat Beaver Stadium will be nothing new.

Penn State: The duo of RBs Bill Belton and Zach Zwinak will challenge the Huskers’ front seven. Each has run for more than 700 yards this season. Zwinak carried 21 times for 141 yards in a 32-23 loss to the Huskers in Lincoln last year.

FACTS & FIGURES

Nebraska and Penn State were designated as crossover opponents when the Huskers joined the Big Ten in 2011. With the conference growing to 14 teams next year and splitting into West and East divisions, Nebraskaand Penn State aren’t scheduled to meet again until 2017 … Christian Hackenberg has a Penn State freshman-record seven 200-yard passing games. He’ll be facing a Nebraska pass rush that is fourth nationally with 32 sacks … Penn State’s 31 first downs against Purdue last week were its most in a game since 2005 …Nebraska’s punt return average of 3.6 yards is on track to be the Huskers’ lowest in the post-World War II era. The 1979 team averaged a school-record low of 5.7.

Gordon’s 20 Lead UMass to 96-90 Victory over Nebraska

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballCHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Derrick Gordon had 20 points to lead five Massachusetts players in double figures and the Minutemen held on in the final minute to open the Charleston Classic with a 96-90 victory overNebraska on Thursday.

Gordon scored 12 of his points in the second half as Massachusetts built a 13-point lead with just under 10 minutes to play. The Cornhuskers (3-1) rallied down the stretch, closing to 89-87 with 1:39 left on Tai Webster’s foul shots.

Nebraska was down 91-88 moments later, but Gordon stood firm on defense and drew a charging call on Deverell Biggs.

Texas Tech transfer Terran Pettaway led the Cornhuskers with a career-high 28 points.

The Minutemen started 4-0 for the third time in the past four seasons. They’ll take on either No. 19 New Mexico or UAB in Friday’s semifinals of the eight-team tournament.

Sampson Carter scored 16 points and Cady Lalanne 15 for Massachusetts.

NU Recruiting Class Climbs to No. 9 in ESPN Rankings

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – Nebraska’s 2014 recruiting class made the biggest move in ESPN’s newest set of rankings released on Thursday, Nov. 21. The Huskers vaulted to No. 9, improving seven spots on the ESPN list.

Nebraska’s class jumped from No. 16 with the late addition of Washington prep product Chandler Smith over the weekend. It also includes ESPN Top-100 high school players Natalie Romeo from California and Kaylee Page from Kansas, along with Tennessee Class 2-AA Player-of-the-Year Jasmine Cincore and California prep standout Darrien Washington.

Nebraska’s group of freshmen for the 2014-15 season also grew by one player, with the addition of Kansas prep star Emily Wood. The 5-5 guard out of Salina Central High School will join the Huskers as a walk-on next season. Wood passed up several Division I scholarship offers, including a pair of Ivy League schools, to join the Huskers.

“Emily turned down scholarship offers from other schools in order to walk on at Nebraska,” Coach Connie Yori said. “That in itself shows her maturity and the value she will bring to our program. She sees the big picture and how Nebraska can be a great fit for her overall development.

“On the court, she will help us because she is a good passer and a great shooter. She is also a smart, tough player. Every morning before school, she’s in the gym working on her game. That is the type of kids you want in your program. She is competitive and will make our team better every day in practice.”

Wood earned honorable-mention Class 5A all-state honors as a junior for Coach Geoff Andrews at Salina Central High School. She added second-team All-AVCTL honors in 2012-13. She averaged 11.2 points and 2.3 assists per game, while hitting 35.6 percent of her three-pointers. She also knocked down 81.8 percent of her free throws. She enters her senior season with 132 career three-pointers.

As a sophomore, Wood averaged 12.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.9 steals per game while shooting 35 percent from three-point range. She earned second-team all-state honors from the Wichita Eagle and added third-team all-state accolades from the Topeka Capital-Journal.

As a freshman starter, Wood averaged 8.7 points and 2.3 assists per game. She earned second-team All-AVCTL honors, while also being named Salina Central Team MVP in a vote by her teammates.

Wood played club basketball for Coach Doug Finch for the MOKAN Eclipse, helping the team to a top-eight finish at 2013 Blue Star National in Augusta, Ga. In the summer of 2011, she was named to the all-tournament teams at Miss Basketball Kearney, the USJN Gateway Challenge and USJN Mountain Madness. As a seventh and eighth-grader, Wood was a club teammate of fellow Husker recruit Kaylee Page with the Eclipse-Sparq. Finch, who is the father of the Nebraska assistant coach Dayna Finch, is also the head boys coach at Salina Central.

Wood, who also competed in volleyball for Salina Central, is an outstanding student who carries better than a 4.1 GPA. She is the National Honor Society President as a senior and is the editor-in-chief of Salina Central’s school newspaper. She won a state championship for news page design in 2013.

Wood chose Nebraska Nebraska over Harvard, Dartmouth, West Point, Washburn and Western Illinois.

“I chose Nebraska because of the people,” Wood said. “I do not think there is a better coaching staff, better teammates, or a better university environment in the country than Nebraska.”

Spencer Long Named Burlsworth Trophy Semifinalist

Spencer-Long-Nebraska-HuskeSenior offensive guard Spencer Long has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the Burlsworth Trophy. This marks the second straight season Long has been a semifinalist for the national award.

Named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, an Arkansas walk-on who went on to become an All-American before losing his life in a car crash 11 days after he was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, the trophy is presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding football player that began his career as a walk-on. Nebraska has a semifinalist for the trophy for the third straight season, as center Mike Caputo was a semifinalist for the Burlsworth Trophy as a senior in 2011, before Long’s recognition the past two years.

A native of Elkhorn, Neb., Long walked on to the Husker program in 2009. After redshirting his first year and not seeing any game action in 2010, Long was one of three offensive linemen to start every game in 2011. His play on the line helped Nebraska rank 14th nationally in rushing offense and paved the way for All-Big Ten running back Rex Burkhead to rush for 1,357 yards.

Long earned a scholarship prior to the 2012 season and was a dominant force from his guard position. Long helped quarterback Taylor Martinez and I-back Ameer Abdullah each top the 1,000-yard rushing barrier in 2012. Long was a first-team All-Big Ten choice and second-team All-America pick for his effort.

Long’s senior season was cut short after he suffered a knee injury against Purdue in October. Early in the season he helped lead a Nebraska offense that rushed for better than 300 yards three times in non-conference play.

Long has also excelled in the classroom at Nebraska. He is a three-time academic All-District VII selection and is a strong candidate for Academic All-America honors this fall. He was also chosen as one of 16 Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes to receive the National Scholar-Athlete Award from the National Football Foundation. The honor carries an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.

Fans are encouraged to vote for their favorite candidate at www.burslworthtrophy.com. From the list of 10 semifinalists, three finalists will be announced later this month.

Huskers Look to Lock down PSU’s Offense

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.-  The Nebraska football team continued its week of preparation for Saturday’s Big Ten Conference showdown with Penn State on Wednesday afternoon. The team practiced in helmets and shoulder pads for just over two hours inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields.

Defensive Coordinator John Papuchis addressed the media after practice, noting that the Husker defense will have their hands full this weekend trying to slow down Penn State’s pro-style offense.

The Huskers will especially have to keep their eyes on true freshman starting quarterback Christian Hackenberg. Hackenberg, the No. 1 rated high school quarterback prospect in 2013, has been lighting up the stat sheets so far in his freshman campaign, recording 2,399 yards and 14 touchdowns, while completing 59 percent of his passes.

“He is a good player, he is a pro-style, old school quarterback that makes good decisions with a big strong arm,” Papuchis said. “You can tell he is a student of the game, I have been impressed with him so far.”

Hackenberg’s favorite target to throw the football to is junior wide receiver Allen Robinson. Robinson, a likely first-team All-Big Ten performer has recorded 81 catches for 1,204 yards with six touchdowns as well.

“When you look at his (Robinson) statistical numbers over the year, he is a guy that is averaging around 120 yards a game,” Papuchis said. “He is a good player. Obviously, we’ve got to be aware of where he is at all times and make sure we are matched up correctly.”

Not only is Robinson a tremendous deep threat, standing at 6-3, he poses as an offensive threat toward the Huskers in many ways, according to Papuchis.

“They feature him in their screen game, they will give it to him on a reverse. Obviously he is their feature guy on a lot of their routes. He is a big part of their offense and we need to do our best to try and take him out of the game.”

With Penn State running a pro-style offense, Papuchis noted that he was not sure how many times you will see three linebackers on the field at the same time versus the Nittany Lions.  Papuchis mentioned that you will likely see a lot of personnel matchups during the game.

Nebraska will hit the practice field again on Thursday as the team moves closer to its final road game of the season. The Huskers will travel to Happy Valley to face off with the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast nationally on Big Ten Network.

Our staff really put a lot of time and effort into recruiting these young men and we feel so positive about each one, and the success they will have through the culture of our program. Huskers Sign Top Recruiting Class in School History

Nebraska-Huskers-Basketball Lincoln – A five-player recruiting with each ranked among the top 25 nationally by ESPN at their position has earned the Nebraska women’s basketball program its best recruiting class ranking in school history for the Class of 2014.

Tennessee Class 2-AA Player of the Year Jasmine Cincore, Kansas Class 4A Player of the Year Kaylee Page, California prep stars Natalie Romeo and Darrien Washington, and Washington High School standout Chandler Smith are all expected to join Coach Connie Yori’s Huskers as freshmen in 2014-15 after signing National Letters of Intent in the past week.

Nebraska’s class was ranked No. 16 nationally by ESPN, before the addition of Smith. The 6-0 guard from Washington signed her letter of intent Monday, after being ranked as the No. 62 player in the nation by ESPN. Her addition could propel the Huskers upward in the recruit rankings for 2014 later this week. Page and Romeo also headline the Husker class. The 6-2 Page was ranked No. 42 nationally by ESPN, while Romeo was No. 55. Romeo, a 5-7 point guard from the Bay Area in California, has been ranked as high as No. 27 nationally by one recruiting service and as the No. 6 point guard in the country.

Romeo’s club teammate, the 6-2 Washington, was ranked as the No. 16 post player in the nation by ESPN, while Cincore was ranked as ESPN’s No. 24 point guard in the 2014 class, despite being projected as a combo guard for the Huskers.

“We are excited about the potential of this recruiting class, and we hope all five players have outstanding senior seasons in high school this year,” Yori said. “We have built quite a bit of momentum in recruiting the past few years and this class is part of it.”

Overall, Nebraska’s current No. 16 national ranking eclipses NU’s previous top recruiting class, which came with the Huskers’ current junior class of Emily Cady, Hailie Sample, Tear’a Laudermill and Brandi Jeffery, which was ranked No. 24 nationally in November of 2010.

Nebraska’s five-player class will be expected to replace the loss of Jordan Hooper, a two-time All-American who is the only senior on the Huskers’ 11-player roster in 2013-14.

Page, a 6-2 senior at Wamego High School in Kansas, was ranked as the No. 13 wing/shooting guard nationally by ESPN. She averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.3 blocked shots, 3.0 assists and 1.8 steals per game as a junior. A gifted shooter, Page knocked down 57 three-pointers for the Red Raiders in 2012-13. She helped Wamego to the Kansas Class 4A state championship while playing for her father, Jim Page, who was the Kansas Coach of the Year.

Romeo, ESPN’s No. 12 point guard nationally as a four-year starter at Carondelet High School in California, averaged 21.4 points, 6.7 assists and 6.3 steals per game as a junior to help the Cougars to the North Coast Section Division II title for the third consecutive season. Along the way, she earned East Bay Athletic League MVP and Nor Cal Prep Player-of-the-Year honors in 2012-13, helping Carondelet to a top 20 national ranking as a team. Romeo has been a starter for one of the premier club programs in the nation, the Cal Stars Elite, since she was an eighth grader. As a member of the Cal Stars program, Romeo has earned all-tournament or MVP honors at 16 national tournaments.

Smith’s signing brought even more talent to the Husker 2014 class. Smith plays point guard for her high school and club teams, but was ranked as the No. 18 wing in the country by ESPN. The 6-0 guard from Brewster High School in Washington, averaged 21.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 4.2 steals as a junior to lead the Bears to a Class 1A state championship. She had 26 points and 10 rebounds in the 2013 state title game, after producing 35 points and 12 boards in the 2012 Class 2B championship game.

Cincore brings more athleticism and strength to the perimeter for the Huskers. The 5-8 guard will add a gritty defensive presence along with an expanding offensive game to the NU backcourt. As a junior at Briarcrest Christian in 2012-13, Cincore averaged 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals per game while leading her team to the state semifinals.

Washington adds size and potential to the Nebraska inside game. The 6-2 Washington plays at Skyline High School in the Bay Area and on the Cal Stars Elite. She is relatively new to basketball, but brings excellent athleticism to the court.

Jasmine Cincore

5-8, Guard, Arlington, Tenn. (Briarcrest Christian)
No. 24 Point Guard in Class of 2014 (ESPN)

Jasmine Cincore brings strength and athleticism to the Husker backcourt in 2014-15. The 5-8 combo guard from Arlington, Tenn., averaged 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals per game while leading Briarcrest Christian to a 27-2 record, a 26-game winning streak and the Class 2-AA state semifinals in 2013. For her performance, she was named Miss Basketball in Tennessee Class 2-AA. She played for Coach Lee Smith at Briarcrest Christian. She was a first-team Class 2-AA all-state selection by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association.

Cincore, who ranked as the No. 24 point guard in the nation despite being a combo guard, also played club basketball for the Tennessee Glory. A tremendous all-around athlete, Cincore finished third in the girls shot put at the 2013 Tennessee Division II High School Track and Field Championships with a throw of 35-6.

“Jasmine is a strong, scrappy, physical kid who goes hard on every possession,” Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. “She is a good teammate, a good leader and selfless. She attacks the paint offensively and does a great job of scoring at the basket with her athleticism and strength. She also has the ability to get to the free throw line and might remind Husker fans a little bit of former Husker great Dominique Kelley. She is a high character young lady and student who put a lot of thought into her decision to become a Husker.”

Cincore chose Nebraska over Michigan, Marquette, Memphis, Tennessee Tech, Kansas State, Auburn and Georgia State.

Kaylee Page

6-2, Forward, Alma, Kan. (Wamego)
No. 13 Wing/Shooting Guard, No. 42 Overall Player in Class of 2014 (ESPN)

Kaylee Page, a 6-2 senior at Wamego High School in Kansas, was ranked among the top 50 players nationally in the class of 2014.

“Kaylee’s a great shooter and can score in multiple other ways. She is well coached and really has a feel for the game,” Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. “She is a gym rat, very competitive, engaged and focused. She is a good leader, student and teammate. She is a very active and aggressive offensive player. She will be a great fit for our system and our style of play because of her versatility.”

Kaylee’s father played college basketball at Johnson County Community College and Pittsburg State. Her mother, Wendy, played collegiately at Emporia State. Her brother, James, is a 6-6 freshman at Grinnell College in 2013-14.

Page chose Nebraska over Stanford and Oklahoma State.

Natalie Romeo

5-7, Guard, Martinez, Calif. (Carondelet)

No. 12 Point Guard, No. 55 Overall Player in Class of 2014 (ESPN)

Natalie Romeo brings a floor general’s mentality and tremendous ball-handling skills to the Nebraska program. The 5-7 point guard from Carondelet High School in California is ranked as high as No. 27 and among the top 50 nationally by several major recruiting services. She is listed No. 55 overall as the No. 12 point guard by ESPN, but was ranked as the No. 6 point guard in the class of 2014 by another major recruiting service. As a junior, Romeo averaged 21.4 points, 6.7 assists and 6.3 steals per game to help the Cougars to the North Coast Section Division II title for the third consecutive season. Along the way, she earned East Bay Athletic League MVP honors and the Nor Cal Prep Player of the Year in 2012-13, helping Carondelet to a top 20 national ranking as a team. Entering her senior season at Carondelet, Romeo has amassed 1,541 points, 393 rebounds, 499 assists and 444 steals.

She has been a starter for one of the premier club programs in the nation, the Cal Stars Elite, since she was an eighth grader. She was coached by Kelly Sopak with the Cal Stars Elite. Romeo was either a tournament MVP or All-Tournament selection in 16 tournaments as a club player, including the 2012 Nike Boo Williams Invitational. She also led the Cal Stars to the 2012 adidas National Championship.

“We absolutely love her toughness and passing ability. Natalie is a floor leader who scores, sets others up to score, and brings energy and intensity every time she steps on the court,” Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. “She likes to push the tempo and she is an aggressive defender. She is a really good fit for our offense and our style of play.”

Romeo chose Nebraska over Boston College, Oregon State, Utah and Arizona.

Chandler Smith

6-0, Guard, Okanogan, Wash. (Brewster)

No. 18 Wing, No. 62 Overall Player in Class of 2014 (ESPN)

The final piece of Nebraska’s recruiting class, Chandler Smith completed a class that was ranked 16th nationally even before she was added. Smith, who plays point guard for her high school and club teams, is ranked as the No. 18 wing in the country and No. 62 player overall by ESPN.

The 6-0 guard from Brewster High School in Washington, averaged 21.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 4.2 steals for the Bears as a junior. Smith, who lives on a ranch outside of Okanogan, Wash., powered Brewster to a Class 1A state championship as a junior in 2013. She scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds in the Bears’ 72-46 victory over Castle Rock in the state title game in Yakima on March 2. Smith hit four three-pointers and had 22 points in the first half alone to fuel the championship game victory. The Bears finished with a 26-1 record and Smith was a first-team all-state selection for the second straight year for Coach Roger Boesel.

Smith, who will enter her fourth season as a varsity starter in 2013-14, erupted for 35 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks as a sophomore in the 2012 Class 2B championship game against Reardan. Brewster fell by a narrow margin in the title game, but Smith was named a first-team Class 2B all-stater. As a freshman in 2010-11, Smith averaged 16.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 5.7 steals and 1.5 blocked shots in 23 games for Brewster.

“Another player that will thrive in our offensive system. Chandler is a great passer, both in transition and half court. She has very good handles and can shoot,” Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. “She is a good three-point shooter and can hit the dribble jumper. She is smart, competitive, has great length and size on the perimeter and is a savvy player. She played in the same AAU organization as former Husker All-American Lindsey Moore, and may actually be ahead of Lindsey offensively at the same age. Chandler is a mature young lady and a great student.”

Smith played her club basketball for the Northwest Blazers Orange.

She chose Nebraska over Gonzaga, Arizona State, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State and Baylor.

Darrien Washington

6-2, Forward/Center, Oakland, Calif. (Skyline)

No. 16 Post Player in Class of 2014 (ESPN)

The most recent addition to Nebraska’s 2014 class, Darrien Washington followed her Cal Stars Elite point guard to Lincoln, committing to the Huskers in September. Washington teamed with fellow Husker recruit Natalie Romeo to power the Cal Stars Elite to a 54-3 overall record in 2013 and an national runner-up finish. A late-comer to basketball, Washington averaged 16.4 points, 12.6 rebounds and 4.9 blocks for Oakland Skyline High School as a junior in 2012-13.

Washington, who ranked by ESPN as the No. 16 post player in the nation, is a back-to-the-basket player who can catch the ball and go to work in traffic on the block, something Nebraska has not featured in several seasons. She was a first-team All-Oakland selection in the Bay Area League in 2012-13.

“We love Darrien’s size and mobility. She is strong, runs the floor well and works hard on defense,” Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. “She has played with some of the top guards in the nation on her Cal Stars Elite team, so she knows how to play with great players. She has good instincts, can move really well for a big, and finishes in transition. She is also a pretty good back-to-the-basket scorer. Darrien has a lot of upside, and we’re excited to help develop her skills.”

Washington chose Nebraska over Utah, Oregon, Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara.
