Shepard Stars in Husker Debut

Lincoln – Jessica Shepard scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in just 17 minutes in her much-anticipated debut, powering the Nebraska women’s basketball team to a 92-54 exhibition victory over Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Shepard, the No. 1 post recruit in the nation coming out of high school in 2015 according to ESPN, hit 11-of-19 shots from the floor, while adding 7-of-11 free throws against NCAA Division II UNK. The 6-4 forward from Fremont High School who was the Nebraska High School Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014, had 11 points in the first quarter and 17 points and six rebounds in the first half despite playing just 10 minutes. Huskers Capture Six Weight Class Crowns

Brookings, S.D. – The 10th-ranked Nebraska wrestling team won six weight class titles in the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open at Frost Arena on Sunday. A total of 13 Husker wrestlers earned spots on the podium at the tournament.

No. 6 Jake Sueflohn won three of his five matches by bonus points en route to the 149-pound title. The senior from Watertown, Wis., who missed last season with an injury, tallied a pin, technical fall and major decision before notching a pair of decisions in the final two rounds. Husker Fall at Purdue

West Lafayette, Ind. – An injury-riddled Nebraska team turned the ball over five times and suffered a 55-45 loss to Purdue at Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday.

The Huskers, who slipped to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten, played without injured starting quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr., as Ryker Fyfe took the loss in his first career start despite throwing for 407 yards and four touchdowns. Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team practiced for a little more than an hour without pads in the Hawks Championship Center on Thursday in preparation for Saturday’s game against Purdue.

Coach Riley updated the media on current injuries. He began with players who will be returning to the field Saturday. The list of players included Nick Gates, Chris Weber, Kevin Maurice and Boaz Joseph. Players who will not be playing this week include Michael Rose-Ivey, Luke Gifford, Kevin Williams, Byerson Cockrell, David Knevel and quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr.

Huskers Continue Prep for Purdue

Lincoln – The Husker football team continued preparations for Saturday’s game at Purdue with a two-hour practice in the Hawks Championship Center and the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields Tuesday afternoon.

Huskers Ranked 10th in Preseason Coaches Poll

The Nebraska wrestling team earned the No. 10 ranking in the first USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll for this season, released on Tuesday.

NU Defense Works to Stop Running Game against Purdue

Lincoln, Neb. — The Nebraska football team practiced in sweats for 90 minutes inside the Hawks Center on Monday afternoon.

Defensive coordinator Mark Banker spoke to the media after practice discussing the injures that continue to cause problems for his Husker defense, specifically the shortage at the cornerback position.

“If Chris Jones can’t go, that’s a good question…we’ll probably have to take a [red] shirt off of somebody,” Banker said. “Right now Boaz [Joseph] is banged up too. We’d have to go with one of the (true freshmen) redshirts Eric Lee [Jr.] or Avery Anderson. Huskers Nipped by Cats

Lincoln – In a another game that went down to the wire, Nebraska watched a two-point conversion attempt bound incomplete with 4:23 left, allowing Northwestern to escape from Memorial Stadium with a 30-28 win on Saturday.

With Nebraska’s fifth loss of the season by five or fewer points, the Huskers slipped to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten, while Northwestern improved to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Nebraska’s five losses have come by a total of 13 points. Continue reading “Huskers Nipped by Cats”

Nebraska Gets Ready For Northwestern

Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team practiced for just over an hour without pads in the Hawks Championship Center on Thursday in preparation for Saturday’s game against Northwestern.

Coach Mike Riley first addressed injuries. Players that will not play Saturday include Luke Gifford, Chris Weber, David Knevel, Kevin Williams and Kevin Maurice. The players returning from injury include Freedom Akinmoladun, Michael Rose-Ivey, Nick Gates, Daniel Davie and David Sutton.

Coach Riley also touched on two things that the team wants to do well on Saturday.

Shepard Claims Preseason Big Ten Freshman Honor

Lincoln – Nebraska’s Jessica Shepard has been named the Preseason Big Ten Freshman of the Year for women’s basketball in 2015-16 by College Sports Madness.

Shepard, a 6-4 forward from Fremont, Neb., is the highest ranked recruit in Nebraska history and arguably the best high school player the state has ever produced, Shepard competed on the gold-medal winning USA Basketball team at the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championships.
