MPCC’s Lesiak Wins Bull Riding at Hastings College Rodeo

Ethan Lesiak of the Mid-Plains Community College rodeo team finished first in the bull riding event MPCC Rodeo Logoof the Hastings College rodeo with a score of 80 points.  In the team standings Mid-Plains finished in 10th position with 25 points.  In the steer wrestling competition, Kris Rasmussen finished in third place at 15.1 seconds.  Tyler Wriedt finished in seventh at 24.6 seconds.

For the season, Mid-Plains is in eighth position in the men’s team standing with 1,095 points.  The women’s team is in 10th place with 170 points in the Great Plains region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.  Individually on the year, Duell Puttergill is in sixth place in the saddle bronc riding with 260 points.  In bull riding Keali’I’aukai Kaai is in fourth place with 290 points; Colter Glendy is in fifth with 230 points; Tyler Viers is sixth with 190 points; Lesiak is ninth with 120 points; Tyler Wriedt is12th with 80 points and Dakota Rice is 13th with 70 points.  In steer wrestling Tyler Murray is tied for 12th with 200 points and Rasmussen is in 14th with 180 points.

Mid-Plains will participate in their final regular season rodeo at Dickinson State N.D. on May 8 – 9.

In the current standings of the Great Plains region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, the men’s team is currently in eighth place with 1,070 points.  The women’s team is in 10th place with 170 points.

Individually, Duell Puttergill is in sixth in saddle bronc riding. In bull riding, Keali’i’auka Kaai is in fourth place with 290 points, fifth place is Colter Glendy with 230 points.  Tyler Viers is sixth with 190 points.  Tyler Wriedt is in 11th place with 80 points and Dakota Rice is tied for 12th with 70 points. Tyler Murray is tied for 11th in steer wrestling.

The top three students in each event, and top two men’s and women’s teams from the NIRA’s 11 regions will qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo, which will be held in Casper, Wyo. June 14 – 20 at the Casper Event Center.

MPCC Rodeo Team Competes at Black Hills State

MPCC Rodeo LogoThe Mid-Plains Community College rodeo team competed in the Black Hills State University rodeo this April 24 – 25 in Spearfish, South Dakota and the women’s team placed seventh with 60 points.

In individual events, Mati Humphrey placed fifth in barrel racing with a time of 28.72 seconds.

For the season, in the Great Plains region of the National Interllegiate Rodeo Association, the men’s team is currently in eighth place with 1,070 points.  The women’s team is in 10th place with 170 points.

MPCC Rodeo LogoThe Mid-Plains Community College rodeo team will travel to Spearfish S.D. and compete in the Will Lantis Yellow Jacket Stampede at Black Hills State University on April 24-25 at the Seven Down Arena.

In the Great Plains region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, the Mid-Plains men’s team is in seventh place with 1070 points and the women’s team is in 10th place with 110 points.  Individually, Puttergill is in sixth place with 260 points in saddle bronc riding.  Tyler Murray is tied for 11th in steer wrestling with 200 points. Jacobson is in 14th place with 110 points in breakaway roping.

In the bull riding, Mid-Plains has five cowboys in the top 15 led by Keali’i’auka Kaai in fourth place with 290 points. Colter Glendy and Tyler Viers are fifth and sixth in the region with 230 and 190 points respectively. Tyler Wriedt is 10th with 80 points and Dakota Rice is tied for 11th with 70 points.

The top three students in each event, and top two men’s and women’s teams from the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s 11 regions will qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo held in Casper, Wyo., June 14 – 20.

The top two men’s teams in the region currently are South Dakota State University with 4,265 points and Black Hills State with 3,200 points.  On the women’s side Dickinson State University leads with 3,015 points, followed by Black Hills State with 1,635 points.

MPCC Rodeo Team Competes at South Dakota State

MPCC Rodeo LogoThe Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo team traveled to Brookings, S. D. and competed in the South Dakota State University Rodeo on April 10 – 11.

Mid-Plains finished in seventh place in the men’s team standings with 60 points and 10th in the women’s team standings with five points.

Individually, in steer wrestling, Tyler Murray finished in fourth at 15.7 seconds and Tyler Wriedt finished in eighth at 18.8 seconds.  In breakaway roping, Kalie Jacobson finished in eighth with 3.1 seconds in the long round.

In the updated Great Plains region, Mid-Plains is seventh in the men’s team standings and the women are 10th.

In the individual standings, Duell Puttergill is fifth with 230 points in saddle bronc riding. Tyler Murray is tied for eighth with 200 points in steer wrestling.  In bull riding, Mid-Plains has four cowboys in the top 15 in the region. Keali’i’aukai Kaai is in fourth place with 290 points; Colter Glendy is in fifth with 230 points; Tyler Viers and Dakota Rice are tied for 10th place with 70 points.

The Mid-Plains rodeo team’s next action is April 17 – 18 at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln rodeo.

MPCC Rodeo Team to Compete at South Dakota State

MPCC Rodeo LogoThe Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team will travel to Brookings, South Dakota to compete in the South Dakota State University Rodeo April 10 -11.

The rodeo is sanctioned by the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association in the Great Plains Region.

The rodeo will consist of colleges and universities from the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

Mid-Plains is currently in seventh place in the men’s team rankings with 860 points.  The cowboys that are ranked in the Great Plains Region are Duell Puttergill, fifth in saddle bronc riding with 230 points ; Tyler Murray, 10th in steer wrestling with 140 points and 15th in team roping header with 70 points.

In the bull riding event, there are five cowboys in the top 15 of the Great Plains Region.  Keali’i’aukai Kaai is currently third in the region and 20th nationally with 290 points.  Colter Glendy is fourth in the region with 230 points.  Tyler Wriedt is ninth with 80 points. Tyler Viers and Dakota Rice are tied for 10th with 70 points.

Mid-Plains head rodeo coach Dustin Elliott said, “I am excited to get the second half of the season underway.”

NPCC Unveils New Athletic Logo

The Mid – Plains Community College Board of Governors approved new athletic logos for North Platte Community College.

The full new logo is similar to the old one with the arched spelling of North Platte with a different Knight in the middle.  The Knight in the middle sports a shield with NPCC Knights in the shield.  The words “Community College” were added to the bottom of the logo.

The logo will be implemented immediately.  The old logos will remain on items currently in use.  As items are replaced, they will include the new logo.

The new logo coincides with the remodeling of the gymnasium at the North Platte Community College McDonald – Belton building. The Knight alone will be in the center of the basketball court.  The full logo with North Platte Community College will be imprinted on the gym wall safety mats at each end of the gymnasium.

The board also approved the logo for the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team.  The rodeo team is the only area wide sport.  The new rodeo team logo will feature the Mid-Plains Community College shield with horns on the side.

MPCC Rodeo Teams Signs Five

MPCC-Rodeo-TeamThe Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team recently signed five recruits for the 2015 – 2016 season.

They are Shane Weber, Rowdy Moon, Riley Weehler, Trey Engel and Garrett Wickett.

Weber is a saddle bronc rider from Burwell.  He is currently third in the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association.  Weber will be seeking a degree in electrical technology.

Moon is a bareback rider from Sargent.  Moon has qualified for the National High School Rodeo finals and is leading the state in bareback.  Moon plans on studying business while attending Mid-Plains.

Weehler is a tie-down roper and team roper from Maloy, Iowa.  Weehler is a two-time Iowa state champion and has qualified for nationals three times.  He is currently fourth in the tie-down and second in the team roping for the state of Iowa.  Weehler will be an agri-business major.

Engel is a bull-rider from Clarks, Nebraska.  Engel is a two-time Iowa State Champion in bull-riding and a three-time national qualifier.  Engel will study diesel technology in college.

Wickett is a bull-rider from Pierce.  Wickett qualified for nationals as a junior and is currently second in the state.  Wickett plans to major in agri-business in college.

Hawaii Student Honored with Rodeo Scholarship

Mid-Plains Community College President Ryan Purdy, Area Vice-President of Academic Affairs and North Platte Community College Jody Tomanek and MPCC Rodeo Team Coach Dustin Elliott present Aukai Kaai, MPCC student and rodeo team member, with a $1,000 scholarship Wednesday night during a MPCC Board of Governors meeting.

It was the first time money from rodeo team fundraisers was used for a scholarship – typically, it goes toward traveling and other team expenses.

“We’re hoping to do this every semester,” said Elliott. “It’s a dual excellence scholarship because the students who receive it have to excel in both the arena and the classroom. They have to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to qualify.”

Kaai competes in bull riding and team roping. He’s a native of Waimānalo, Hawaii.

MPCC Rodeo Team to Hold Banquet

MPCC-Rodeo-TeamThe Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo team will be holding a fund-raising banquet on Saturday, February 7 at the Holiday Inn Express, located at 300 Holiday Frontage Road in North Platte.

Social Hour begins at 5:30 p.m.  Prime Rib / Rocky Mountain Oyster Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

There will be both a silent auction and a live auction which will take place following the dinner.  Kyle Schow from Ogallala will be the auctioneer.  Two tickets to the 2015 National Finals Rodeo will be auctioned off, along with many other items.

A dance will follow featuring Austin Wahlert.  Wahlert is a singer songwriter originally from Northern Colorado, where he grew up on a family ranch. Wahlert grew up in the world of rodeo participating as a collegiate and professional bull rider who found music along the way.
