NPCC Athletics Has Solid 2014–15 Seasons

NPCC Knights LogoThe North Platte Community College athletic teams enjoyed a solid 2014 – 2015 year filled with close calls, excitement, competitiveness and emotion.

Kevin O’Connor, men’s basketball coach and athletic director at NPCC, said, “We had a solid year with all the sports. The volleyball team were runner-ups in the region and the softball team winning the region.”

Volleyball

The Lady Knights volleyball season started out with the NPCC Subway Classic and ended in the finals of the Region IX Division II tournament losing to Central Community College, who finished second in the final regular season National Junior College Athletic Association Division II poll.

The Lady Knights finished with a 20 – 18 record and produced three All-Region IX players:  Erika Goodwin, Joli Hopping and Samantha Kennedy.  Kennedy and Hopping were both selected for the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference team and along with Samantha Byrn, were selected to the All-Region IX tournament team.

Many former players came back to the college on Dec. 9th to celebrate and recognize Sally Thalken’s retirement from coaching. Thalken coached the Lady Knights for 34 seasons.  She was replaced by Alexa Hopping in December.

Hopping has been busy on the recruiting trail, so far signing seven players for the 2015 – 16 squad. Hopping said, “We have four returning sophomores. Each of them played at some point in the year with quality roles. The incoming freshmen are competitors. They were major players for their programs, and I can’t wait to get them in the gym.

Women’s Basketball

The Lady Knights basketball team finished the season with a 14 – 14 record.  Five of the 14 losses were four points or less.

Three Lady Knight’s players:  sophomores April Stull from Sweeney, Texas, Aliyah Brown from Omaha, as well as freshman Sarah Mahr from Sidney received All-NCCAC honors.  Brown and Stull were also named to the All-Region IX Division II team.  Mahr was selected for the All-Tournament team.

Lady Knights head coach Richard Thurin said “The season didn’t end like we wanted.  We lost several close games. The ladies competed very hard all year.”

The Lady Knights set a new team record this past season for points allowed. They allowed an average of 58.8 points per game

Thurin said about recruiting, “I like the recruits that we have signed and am looking forward to signing other players that will make a difference.”

The Lady Knights have signed four new players for the 2015 – 2016 season.

Men’s Basketball

The Knights basketball team looked to continue their winning ways.  They finished the season with a record of 24 – 9 and advanced to the semi-finals of the Region IX tournament, falling to the host team, Northwest Wyoming.

Sophomore Cameron Williams led the Knights in scoring on the season with 20.9 points per game. Williams will move on to play at Eastern Kentucky University, which is a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I program. Williams, along with Marco Pascolo, a sophomore from Udine, Italy, were selected to the All-NCCAC team.  Williams and freshman Matt Thomas also were also selected to the All- Region team and All-Tournament team.

Besides Williams, four other Knights are moving on to play at the next level.  Pascolo is taking his talents to South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, an NCAA Division two school, Riley Rice and C.J. Polk are going to play at University of Minnesota at Crookston, also a Division II School.

O’Connor said, “We had a solid year with a few disappointing losses and did not make our ultimate goal, a trip to the national tournament. We did win the conference for the ninth time in the past 10 years and made it to the Region IX semifinals for the third consecutive year.

Softball

The Knights softball team started out the season slow, but improved throughout the season.  It ended with a record of 19 – 29, but went 7 – 1 against Region IX Division II opponents.

Knights head coach Janelle Higgins said “Softball had a solid season in Region IX. We won the Region and advanced to the District Tournament. We have a great group of freshmen returning but will miss our leaders that moved on to four year programs.”

The Knights moving on are Shannon Lieber, who is going to play at Colorado State University at Pueblo, Brittney Odum, who will be going to William Penn University.  Mehana Chang will be walking on at Western Oregon University and Sara Runia will walk on at Northern Colorado.  The other sophomore on the squad, Christina Rodie, will also be attending the University of Northern Colorado but not playing.

Odum, Runia, Lieber, Baileigh Oleson and Sara Villalobos were selected for the All-Region Division II team.  Runia, Lieber, Oleson, Villalobos and Jessica Jarvis were selected to the all-tournament team. Lieber, Villalobos, Chang and Jarvis were selected for the All-NCCAC team. Villalobos was selected as Region IX freshman of the year and head coach Janelle Higgins was named Division II coach of the year.

The Knights ended their season at the District G playoff against sixth rated Kirkwood Community College.

Higgins said, “We are back in full swing of recruiting as of this last weekend and will be in Colorado, Iowa and Nevada over the next three months to find a few 2015 athletes, but filling out 2016 and 2017 as well. Assistant Coach Soliel Atenza will be working the California tournaments this summer as well.”

Academics

Academically, the Knights athletic teams for this past semester had 24 of 51 athletes make the Mid-Plains Community College President’s or Dean’s List.  Knight’s basketball player Marco Pascolo was named the Scholar Athlete of the year for the college, majoring in engineering with a 3.95 GPA.

O’Connor said that the school can be proud of how the student athletes have conducted themselves in the classroom and believes that NPCC will lead Region IX in number of academic All-Region players that were placed on the list.

With the new look of the gymnasium and added players, the 2015 – 16 NPCC athletics should continue to be solid and competitive in Region IX.

 

NPCC Lady Knights Announce Junior Sports Camps

Alexa Hopping, Head Volleyball coach at North Platte Community College announced the dates for the Lady Knights Junior Volleyball and Basketball Camps for the summer.

The dates of the camp are: June 24 – 26 for girls entering grades 3 – 5; and June 29 – July 1 for girls entering grades 6 – 8.

The volleyball camp will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the basketball camp will be from  1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..

The volleyball aspect of the camp will focus on basic fundamentals of volleyball such as footwork, passing, setting, serving, offensive skills and defensive skills.

The basketball aspect of the camp will focus on shooting, passing, dribbling, footwork, defense, rebounding and team play.

Cost of the camp is $50 for one camp or $65 for both camps.

Campers will receive a free camp T-shirt if application is sent in before June 8.  After June 8 camp T-shirts are $10.

NPCC Lady Knights Sign Brennan from Alliance

 

Mickenzie BrennanThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team announced the signing of Mickenzie Brennan.

Brennan, a 5’9” forward,  played for the Alliance High School Lady Bulldogs.  In her senior year, Brennan averaged 8.3 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, 2.4 assists per game and 2.0 steals per game.

Lady Knights Head coach Richard Thurin said, “ Mickenzie is a good athlete and knows the game”.

Brennan is the first cousin of former Nebraska Lady Cornhusker All-American Jordan Hooper, who also graduated from Alliance High School.

She was an All Western Conference and Honorable Mention All State selection.

Academically Brennan  was a Western conference scholar and has won an academic letter all four years.

Mickenzie is the daughter of Matt and Lori Brennan of rural Alliance.

NPCC Knights Softball End Season at District Championship

Cedar Rapids, Iowa ….. The North Platte Community College Knights NPCC Knights Logosoftball team’s season came to an end at the District G championship, losing to the National Junior College Athletic Association sixth rated Kirkwood Community College Lady Eagles 9 – 0 and 19 – 1.

In the first game the Lady Eagles’ pitcher Nicky Simpson pitched a no – hitter and used home runs by Alicia Cravero and Jasmine Ragusi to gain the first game win.  Cravero, who had 12 home runs coming into the championship hit home runs in the second and the sixth inning.  Simpson pitched six innings and struck out five.  She only faced 20 batters.  Baileigh Oleson took the loss for the Knights.

In the second game the solid pitching and offense for the Lady Eagles continued. Lady Eagle starting pitcher Brooke Prior pitched five innings and only allowed one hit, facing 17 batters.  Chasney Jenkins and Natalie Clark each homered for the Lady Eagles.  Shannon Lieber scored the only run on the day for the Knights when she homered off of Lady Eagle reliever Hannah Cole.  Lieber took the loss for the Knights in game two.  The Lady Eagles stole 18 bases on the day.  They were led by Jenkins who swiped seven bases on the day.

The Knights, the Region IX Division II champions ended the season with 19 wins and 29 losses.

NPCC Lady Knights Basketball Sign Frost

Linsey Frost NPCC KnightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team announces the signing of Linsey Frost of Knoxville, Ark. for the 2015 – 2016 basketball season.

Frost, a 5’ 7” shooting guard, played for the Lamar High School Lady Warriors.

Frost averaged 8.6 points per game 1.7 assists per game, 1.3 steals per game and 2.9 rebounds per game.  Frost shot 33 percent from the field and 29 percent from behind the three-point line.

She was an all-district player in her junior and senior year and played in an all star game her senior year.

Knights head coach Richard Thurin said, “Linsey shoots the three-pointer pretty well and plays with a lot of intensity.”

NPCC Knights Softball to Play Kirkwood for District Title

NPCC Knights LogoThe North Platte Community College Knights Softball team will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa May 1 – 2 to play the Kirkwood Community College Lady Eagles for the National Junior College Athletic Association District G championship.

The Knights, (19 – 27) won the Region IX title with a win over Central Community College 5 – 4 on Saturday to advance to the district championship.

The Knights are led in hitting by Sara Villalobos with a batting average of .433 and runs scored with 37.  Villalobos has seven home runs, 32 runs batted in, nine doubles and a slugging percentage of .645.

Brittney Odum, along with Sara Runia lead the Knights in home runs with 10.  Odum is batting .400 with eight doubles, 41 runs batted in, 33 runs and a slugging percentage of .671.  Runia is batting .388 with eight doubles, 32 runs batted in, 25 runs scored and a slugging percentage of .672.

In the ring, Baileigh Oleson is 8 – 11 on the season with a 3.16 earned run average.  Oleson has struck out 70 batters which is a 4.03 strikeouts per game ratio.  Shannon Lieber is 9 – 11 and a 3.94 earned run average. Lieber has struck out 64, which is a 3.71 strikeouts per game.

The Knights are 12th in the nation in home runs in NJCAA Division II with 43.

Kirkwood is rated eighth in the country in the latest NJCAA Division II poll with a record of 43 – 8.  The Lady Eagles defeated Southwestern Community College 17 – 3 to win the Region XI title.

The Lady Eagles have a powerful offense leading the nation as a team in runs scored with 523, doubles with 130, home runs with 109, runs batted in with 486 and stolen bases with 165. They are fourth in the nation in team batting average at.414.

Offensively they are led by Chasney Jenkins who is hitting .550 on the season and has 66 stolen bases.  Jenkins has nine home runs, 20 doubles, 39 runs batted in, 85 runs scored and a .893 slugging percentage.

Lexie Biehl leads the Lady Eagles with 25 home runs.  Biehl is hitting .457 with 13 doubles, 80 runs batted in, 65 runs scored and a slugging percentage of 1.053.

Other Lady Eagles to watch are Brooke Prior, who has 18 home runs, a .486 batting average, 16 doubles and a .979 slugging percentage. Alicia Crivaro has 12 home runs, a .380 batting average, 11 doubles and a .737 slugging percentage.

In the ring, the Lady Eagles have a team earned run average of 2.02. Nicolette Simpson is 18 – 5 with a 1.80 earned run average.  Simpson has struck out 123 batters and has given up only five home runs.  Prior is 13 – 0 with a 1.89 earned run average. She has struck out 101 batters and allowed seven home runs.

It is a best of three series.  Game times are at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, May 1.  If a third game is necessary, it will be played at noon on Saturday, May 2.

ESPN 1410 radio will be broadcasting the games.  They can also be heard on www.northplattepost.com.  There will be no video live streaming for these games.

NPCC Knights Softball Players Garner Postseason Awards

NPCC Knights LogoThe North Platte Community College Knights softball team landed five players on the All-Region IX team and on the All-tournament team.

Brittney Odum, Sara Runia, Sara Villalobos, Shannon Lieber and Bailey Oleson were named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX Division II all-region team

Runia, Villalobos, Lieber, Oleson and Jessica Jarvis were named to the Region IX Division II all-tournament team.

The Knights won the Region IX championship by defeating Central Community College 5 – 4 in the finals on Saturday.

Villalobos was also named Region IX Freshman of the year.  She leads the Knights in hitting with a .433 average, 61 hits, nine doubles and 37 runs scored.  Villalobos also has seven home runs on the season and 32 runs batted in. In the tournament Villalobos batted .500 with one run scored in the two games.

Odum is hitting .400 on the season, has eight doubles and a .671 slugging percentage.  She leads the team in runs batted in with 41 and tied with Runia with 10 home runs.

Runia, besides leading the Knights in home runs with Odum leads the team in slugging percentage with .672.  Runia is hitting .388 with 25 runs scored and 32 runs batted in.  In the tournament Runia batted .400 and hit two home runs.

Lieber, is batting .274 on the season with eight doubles and seven home runs for a slugging percentage of .489.  In the ring, Lieber was 9 – 11 on the season with a 3.94 earned run average. Lieber struck out 64 hitters.

Oleson, is batting .414 in 35 plate appearances with one home run.  In the ring, Oleson is 8 – 11 with a 3.16 earned run average.  She has struck out 70 batters.  In the tournament, Oleson pitched both games and allowed four runs on seven hits.  She struck out 12 hitters in the two games.

Jarvis, in the tournament batted .285 with one double.  The double drove in the winning run in the championship game against Central.  On the season Jarvis is hitting .308 with five doubles and 10 stolen bases.

Other members of the All – Region team are Janey Pasold, Shelbi Dittmer, Morgan Uldrich, all from Central Community College; Alexis Graewe, Megan Hartman and Kristin Thomas from Southeast Community College.

Pasold was named player of the year for Region IX.

Pasold and Uldrich, along with teammates Jacey Bretschneider and Logan Zeleney were selected to the All – Tournament team.  Graewe and Hartman were the representatives from Southeast on the team.

Knights Head Coach Janelle Higgins was named Region IX Division II Coach of the year.

Southeast Community College won the Sheila Worley Sportsmanship award.

The Knights will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to face  Kirkwood Community College in the District G playoff on May 1 – 2 to determine who will go to the NJCAA Division II National tournament in Cinton, Miss.

NPCC Volleyball Signs Starr from McPherson County

North Platte Community College Lady Knights Head Volleyball coach Alexa Hopping has signed Ashley Starr to a national letter of intent for the upcoming school year.

Starr played volleyball for the McPherson County Longhorns.  In her senior year, Starr had 159 kills and a .275 hitting percentage.  In addition, she recorded 23 service aces and had 111 blocks.

Hopping said, “She is a hard worker and has a lot of athletic ability.”

Ashley is the daughter of Scott and Bobbi Starr.

With the addition of Starr, the number of incoming freshman to the Lady Knights volleyball program is seven.  The Lady Knights previously signed Tracy Blake of Maxwell, Megan Chintala of Fleming, Colo., MaKenna Ketter of Imperial, Jessica Lovitt of Mullen, Josie Palmer of Brady and Shelby Wolever of Brush, Colo.

NPCC Basketball Players Named to All-Nebraska Team

NPCC Knights LogoEight North Platte Community College Knights and Lady Knights basketball players were named to the All – Nebraska junior college team.  The teams, compiled by the Omaha World Herald was unveiled on Sunday, April 26.

On the men’s team, Cameron Williams and Marco Pascolo were named first team selections.  Williams was named honorary captain of the squad.  Shyquinn Dix, Riley Rice and Matt Thomas were named honorable mention.

On the women’s team, April Stull was named to the second team.  Aliyah Brown and Sarah Mahr were named honorable mention.

The All-Nebraska team is chosen from the six junior colleges in the state of Nebraska.  In addition to North Platte Community College, the other schools are McCook Community College, Western Nebraska Community College, Southeast Community College, Central Community College and Northeast Community College.

Williams recently signed a national letter of intent to play for National Collegiate Athletic Association Division one program Eastern Kentucky University.  Williams was the leading scorer for the Knights this past season, averaging 20.9 points per game

Pascolo has signed to play at the NCAA Division two college, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and major in electrical engineering.  Pascolo led the Knights in rebounding with 7.5 rebounds per game.  He also averaged 10.9 points per game.

Stull led the Lady Knights in both scoring and rebounding has not decided where to play next year.  Stull averaged 15.3 points per game and 8.4 points per game.

NPCC Knights Overpowers Central for Region IX Title

The North Platte Community College Knights softball team defeated the Central Community College Lady Raiders 5 – 4 to claim the 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX Division II softball championship.

Central got the scoring started when Logan Zeleney homered in the top of the second to give Central a 1 – 0 lead.   The Knights answered back in the bottom of the third with four runs.  Jessica Jarvis singled with two outs. The next hitter Mehana Chang hit a two-run homerun.  Sara Villalobos then singled and scored on a home run by Sara Runia.

The score stayed 4 – 1 until Jayd Roberts and Zeleney  hit back-to-back home runs to cut into the Knights lead 4 – 3.  It was Zeleney’s second home run of the day.  Janey Pasold in the fifth singled, stole second, stole third and then scored on the throwing error to tie the score at four.

In the Knights’ sixth, Tara Crouch walked and scored the winning run on a double by Jarvis.

The Lady Raiders threatened in the seventh when Kira Ramirez walked and advanced to third on a single by Morgan Uldrich.  Runners were on first and third and Roberts lined to Baileigh Oleson, the Knights’ pitcher, to end the ball game.

Oleson pitched the complete game for the win. Oleson allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks.  She also struck out two Lady Raiders.

Knights Head Coach Janelle Higgins said, “They wanted to win; they wanted to show that their hard work paid off.  They came out here ready to go, ready to fire. They battled.  They could have gave up but battled through it and it’s great.”

Higgins received a bucket of ice over her head by her jubilant players.

Central defeated Southeast in the first game of the day 3 – 1 to eliminate Southeast.

The Knights, who are now 19 – 27, continue their season and will play the winner of Region 11 on May 1 – 2 at the home field of the winner of Region 11.  The Region 11 tournament was postponed until Sunday due to inclement weather.
