Solar Power Gaining Popularity Among Nebraska Farmers

farmlandBENEDICT, Neb. (AP) — A small but growing number of Nebraska farmers and owners of businesses and homes are adding solar or wind power to their property to save money and help the environment.

Rick Hammond recently turned on 96 solar panels near his grain bins to start generating electricity.

Hammond says he’s proud to be doing something to help the Earth, and he’s looking forward to saving about $3,000 a year on his electricity bill.

Hammond’s solar power system cost $84,864, but a combination of tax credits and a USDA grant reduced the cost to $19,100.

Solar power proponents worry that projects could slow considerably next year if Congress doesn’t extend the current tax credits for solar power.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 20-year-old Omaha man is awaiting sentencing for the February 2014 rape of a 16-year-old girl.

Javohn Templeman was convicted of first-degree sexual assault on Friday. He could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison in January.

Another man, Nicholas Bregg, pleaded no contest to second-degree sexual assault and faces up to 10 years in prison.

Authorities believe the girl was drugged at a party, and then Templeman and Bregg both sexually assaulted her after she was unconscious.

Prosecutors offered both men deals because of concerns about how the case was handled. The defendants weren’t arrested until nearly a year afterward.

Nebraska Lawmakers Hearing Call to ‘Step It Up’ on Roads Funding

roadLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — With Nebraska expected to see millions in new state funding for roads next year, lawmakers are looking for ways to accelerate work on a decades-old backlog of highway projects.

Members of the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee have spent the summer traveling the state to examine Nebraska’s highway and bridge repair needs as they prepare legislation for next year’s session.

Lawmakers voted in May to increase the state fuel tax to 31.6 cents per gallon by 2019, eventually generating an extra $25 million in annual roads funding for the state and $51 million for cities and counties.

Sen. Jim Smith of Papillion, the committee chairman, says lawmakers are trying to find ways to generate more money up front so work can start sooner on road and bridge projects.
