LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Eastern Nebraska health officials have issued a warning about the potentially harmful levels of smoke in the air from agricultural burning.

The health departments in both Lincoln-Lancaster and Douglas counties issued a health advisory Friday for people with asthma, lung disease and other respiratory or heart conditions. Health officials say the source of the smoke is fires in the Flint Hills area of Kansas, several hours south of the Omaha metro area.

The notice applies to adults as well as children, and anyone with these health issues are advised to stay indoors with doors and windows closed.

Lincoln-Lancaster air quality supervisor Chris Schroeder says the area will likely be blanketed in the smoke for several days.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An attorney for a former doctor accused of killing four people with ties to an Omaha medical school has requested that his trial be moved and the jury sequestered.

The Omaha World-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1D4xj8l ) Anthony Garcia’s attorney Robert Motta Jr. made the request Friday, calling it a “necessary evil.” But prosecutors say the move would be drastic and inconvenient.

Garcia is charged with first-degree murder in the 2008 deaths of Thomas Hunter, the 11-year-old son of Creighton University pathologist William Hunter, and Shirlee Sherman, the family’s housekeeper, as well as the May 2013 deaths of Creighton pathologist Roger Brumback and his wife, Mary.

Authorities say Garcia was motivated by revenge for being fired from Creighton’s pathology department in 2001.

A judge has taken the request under advisement.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A 20-year-old Kansas man has been charged with planning a suicide bomb attack against Fort Riley in an alleged plot to support the Islamic State group.

Federal prosecutors say John T. Booker, of Topeka, was arrested Friday while trying to arm what he thought what a 1,000-pound bomb inside a van near the base. Prosecutors say the arrest came after an FBI sting investigation.

Booker is facing several charges, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Court documents don’t indicate whether he has an attorney.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says Booker was arrested Friday near Manhattan, Kansas, a city near the Army base about 100 miles west of Kansas City. Grissom didn’t elaborate on the arrest.

A FBI agent says there was no breach at the military base.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Police Department recruiters hope a new video showcasing various aspects of an officer’s life will attract people from all walks of life.

Created by Officer Phil Hodges and his photography company partner, the two-minute “Answer the Call” video was released online at the end of March. Hodges took a cinematic approach to depict various aspects of police life, including vehicle and safety training exercises, medical instruction and patrol work.

Lt. Gregg Barrios, of the backgrounds investigations and recruiting unit, said the idea was to create a well-balanced video that displayed the diversity of officers and opportunities in the field. He hopes the footage will help the department with their summer recruitment push.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 27-year-old Omaha resident has been accused of fatally shooting a man at a parking lot in Omaha’s Old Market district nearly three years ago.

Police said Friday that Tavar Hudson is in custody. Court records say he’s charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. He’s suspected of shooting 19-year-old Deanthony Bryant on June 17, 2012. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment about the accusation on Hudson’s behalf.

Police have said an officer on bike patrol noticed a large crowd around 2 a.m. that day and then heard gunfire. The officer found the wounded Bryant in the parking lot. Police say Bryant was pronounced dead later at a hospital.

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska World War II veteran will get back his military dog tags after losing them more than 70 years ago.

J.A. Barr, known as Jack, lost his dog tags in the High Desert of central Oregon while he attended training camps in preparation to travel to Europe during World War II. Bill Kaufman, a retired surveyor from Bend, Oregon, found the former Belgrade resident’s dog tags about 20 years ago.

Kaufman began the search for the tags’ owner earlier this month with the help of Boone County veterans services officer Jacqueline Wells and genealogist enthusiast Cheryl Tesar of DeWitt.

Kaufman was surprised that he was able to give the dog tags to Barr himself, rather than one of his descendants. Barr, who now lives in Mannsville, was equally surprised someone had found them and wanted to return them.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two men accused in the slaying of a 21-year-old Lincoln man during a botched home invasion robbery have taken deals.

23-year-old Jason Holmes and 26-year-old Michael Nevels pleaded no contest and were convicted this week of being accessories to robbery. Prosecutors had lowered the charges in exchange for Holmes’ and Nevels’ pleas.

Prosecutors have said Holmes was the getaway driver and Nevels was found with the weapon used to kill Maurice Williams last August.

Court records say two other defendants in the case have pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and attempted robbery. Awaiting trials are 19-year-old Joshua Carr, who also is known as Joshua Nootenboom-Carr, and 23-year-old Derick Lewis.

ALBION, Neb. (AP) — The Boone County Sheriff’s Office says a man was killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash southeast of Albion.

The sheriff’s office said a man on Thursday morning was passing a semitrailer westbound on Nebraska 56 when his vehicle crashed into an eastbound pickup truck.

The pickup truck’s driver, Gary Nauenburg, was taken to a Boone County hospital, along with the other vehicle’s driver.

The sheriff’s office says Nauenburg died at the hospital. The condition of the other vehicle’s driver wasn’t immediately known early Friday.

An investigation is ongoing.

 

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A dentist has been fined $1,000 and sentenced to probation for stealing dental gold and equipment when he worked at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.

Prosecutors say 58-year-old Randall Toothaker, formerly of Lincoln, was sentenced on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Omaha. In December he’d pleaded no contest and was convicted of stealing government property.

Investigators say Toothaker stole more than $16,000 in dental gold and equipment from a locked cabinet in July 2013. An officer stopped Toothaker while he was leaving the property.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say two more teens have been arrested in connection with the shooting of a high school student.

The 17-year-olds face accessory charges in the shooting of 18-year-old Tyrus Harris. One has been charged as an adult, and the other as a juvenile. Another 17-year-old boy was booked following the March 31 shooting on suspicion of first-degree felony assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

The Associated Press typically does not name juveniles charged with crimes.

Harris, a North High School student, remains hospitalized in serious condition after being shot near the school. Harris is a senior and played on the state championship football team last season.

Authorities say the 18-year-old was shot after a verbal altercation escalated after school.
