Nebraska Scores Well in GSR Report

UNLFive Nebraska teams achieved perfect scores in the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report released on Tuesday by the NCAA.

The five Husker teams to earn a perfect 100 percent GSR score include women’s golf, women’s basketball, volleyball, softball and women’s tennis. Those teams all led or tied for the lead in the Big Ten Conference in GSR scores among their respective sports. In fact, the women’s golf, women’s basketball, volleyball and women’s tennis programs have achieved a perfect GSR score each of the 10 years the rate has been computed by the NCAA.

In addition to the five teams achieving a perfect score, the women’s gymnastics, soccer and men’s gymnastics programs each topped the 90 percent score, and 14 of Nebraska’s programs achieved a GSR scores of 80 percent or better. Overall, Nebraska had an all student-athlete GSR score of 83 percent.

The Nebraska football team had a GSR rate of 81 percent which ranked fourth among the 14 Big Ten Conference schools, trailing only Northwestern, Penn State and Rutgers. The 2014 Husker football team has four seniors playing this fall as graduate students with the entire senior class on track to earn their degrees by next spring.

The Graduation Success Rate is an NCAA measurement that, unlike the federally mandated graduation rates, includes transfer data in the calculation. The GSR scores released on Tuesday are based on four classes of scholarship student-athletes who entered college in the fall of 2004 to the fall of 2007.

They allow a six-year window in which the student-athletes can earn their degree. Although GSR scores include student-athletes who transferred to Nebraska, they do not count student-athletes who transferred to another school and were academically eligible at the time of their transfer.

Badgers Top Huskers, 3-0

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersMadison, Wis. – The 14th-ranked Nebraska volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match at No. 5 Wisconsin on Sunday evening, 19-25, 21-25, 18-25, at the UW Field House.

The Huskers fell to 12-7 overall and 6-4 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin moved to 18-2 overall and 9-1 in conference play to take sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. The Badgers have won nine straight matches, five against currently ranked teams.

Amber Rolfzen led the Huskers with 10 kills, while Kadie Rolfzen and Kelsey Fien each had nine kills. Mary Pollmiller had 29 assists, and Justine Wong-Orantes had 15 digs.

Wisconsin setter Lauren Carlini had 34 assists and a career-high nine kills to lead the balanced Badger attack. Six Badgers had kills in the match, and each had at least six.

UW outhit NU .265 to .143. The Badgers had a 56-51 edge in digs and 8-6 edge in blocks. Each team had three aces, but the Huskers had six service errors.

The Huskers took an early 4-1 lead but saw the Badgers reel off an 8-1 run to go up 9-5. The Huskers got back within 10-9 and still trailed by one at 18-17. But Wisconsin got kills from Courtney Thomas and Kelli Bates to go up 20-17. A kill by Pollmiller closed the gap to 20-18, but the Badgers scored the next three points to take control, and they finished out the 25-19 win.

In the second set, it was Wisconsin who went up 3-1 early and the Huskers who rallied to a 9-6 lead after an 8-3 spurt, as the Rolfzen twins combined for five kills with Kadie Rolfzen adding an ace. Wisconsin reclaimed the lead at 14-13 on a Bates kill, and the Badgers pushed it to 16-14 on a Dominique Thompson kill. Carlini added a kill and a solo stuff to put the Badgers up 19-15. After a timeout, Fien put down two kills around a block by Pollmiller to get the Huskers within 19-18 and force a Badger timeout. Nebraska tied it 19-19 after two hits by Carlini, but the Badgers responded with two points to go up 21-19. Nebraska appeared to close the gap to 22-21 after Carlini hit wide, but it was ruled off a Husker and instead UW went up 23-20. The Badgers closed out the 25-21 win with an ace.

UW went up 11-7 in the third to force a Husker timeout, but the Huskers battled back with kills by Amber Rolfzen and Kadie Rolfzen to cut it to 11-9. However, a 5-0 Badger run put them up 16-9. NU pulled within four, 18-14, after a Sydney Townsend ace, Meghan Haggerty kill and Alicia Ostrander/Haggerty block. But the Badgers answered to go up 20-14 and finished out the sweep with a 25-18 win.

The Huskers are on the road again next weekend for matches at Rutgers on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) and at Maryland on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT).

Huskers Take on Big Ten Leader Wisconsin

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersThe No. 14 Nebraska volleyball team continues a four-match road stretch with a 4 p.m. match at No. 5 Wisconsin on Sunday on ESPN2. The Huskers (12-6, 6-3 Big Ten) have split their Big Ten matches each of the last three weeks, winning the first and dropping the second each week, but will look to reverse that trend in Madison. Nebraska came back from a 2-0 deficit to topple No. 25 Minnesota on Wednesday, while Wisconsin swept Iowa at home. The Badgers (17-2) lead the Big Ten with an 8-1 conference record and have not let up since their run to the NCAA national championship match last season. Sunday’s match will mark NU’s seventh match against a ranked opponent this season. After Sunday at Wisconsin, the Huskers will have faced the current Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 teams in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

Media Information
Sunday’s match will be televised on ESPN2 and streamed online at WatchESPN.com. Fans can also listen to the action with John Baylor and Lindsay Peterson on the 25-station Husker Sports Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln and The Wolf 93.3 FM in Omaha. Fans inside and outside the state of Nebraska will also be able to catch the live audio feed on Huskers.com for free. Live stats will be available at Huskers.com as well.

Series History
The Huskers lead the all-time series 17-1-1 with Wisconsin’s lone win coming on Oct. 28, 1978. The Huskers have won 17 straight after the series began with a tie and a Wisconsin victory, but last year’s matches went five and four sets, respectively. Nebraska won 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19) in Madison on Nov. 8. Kadie Rolfzen had 19 kills and 17 digs, while Amber Rolfzen had eight kills and nine digs.

Last Time Out
The 14th-ranked Nebraska volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit for an epic 3-2 (21-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-7) comeback win at No. 25 Minnesota on Wednesday. The Huskers found themselves in a deep hole after dropping the first two sets and falling behind 16-13 in the third set. But just as they did at Minnesota in 2011, the Huskers roared back to win the match in five. Behind the arm of Kelsey Fien, the Huskers rallied to the 25-21 third-set victory, controlled the fourth set and ended the match on a dominating 8-0 run. Kadie Rolfzen had 17 kills and 14 digs to lead the Huskers, while Fien had 14 kills over the last three sets off the bench. Mary Pollmiller had a season-best 54 assists.
