Thousands of Scotts Bluff County tax notices sent wrong. Way to go!

GERING, Neb. (AP) — Owners of more than 5,000 land parcels in Scotts Bluff will be getting new valuation notices because the ones they’ve been sent were wrong.

Scotts Bluff County Assessor Amy Ramos told the county commissioners on Monday evening that the printing company put last year’s valuation in the spot for this year’s valuation and vice versa.

Ramos says there was no pattern to where the parcels were situated in the county, and they varied between residential, business and agricultural land.

The commissioners took action Monday night as the Board of Equalization to approve mailing of new postcards with the correct figures.

Some Just Wont Go Without A Fight…

GERING, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 45-year-old Gering man was arrested after a vehicle chase that ended with a gunshot and a struggle with officers.

Bail has been set at $250,000 for Tad Shelly, who faces several charges.

The chase began around 10 p.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 26 between Scottsbluff and Minatare when a Scotts Bluff county deputy attempted to pull over a suspected drunken driver in a pickup.

The truck stopped just east of Minatare. Officials say the pickup driver then drove backward into the deputy’s car, and the deputy fired his handgun and hit the front tire on the driver’s side.

Other officers soon arrived to help take Shelly into custody.

A jailer said Shelly remained in custody on Wednesday. Online court records don’t list the case yet.

Crop Conditions Looking Good For Eastern Nebraska…What About The West?

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Rain has improved crop conditions in eastern Nebraska, while conditions declined in the west because of continued dry weather.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture say bands of showers moved across eastern Nebraska last week bringing over an inch of rain and some hail to some locations. Little or no rain fell in the west.

The weekly report shows 75 percent of the corn and 71 percent of the soybeans are in good or excellent condition. Half the wheat crop is turning color and the harvest will be early this year. Alfalfa and pastures are showing little growth because of the dry conditions.

The USDA says 50 percent of Nebraska’s topsoil and 54 percent of the subsoil is dry.

ANSLEY, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska prosecutor says the driver of a pickup truck that collided with a van carrying high school basketball players had a heart condition that may have been a factor in the wreck.

Seventy-year-old Albert Sherbeck, of Ansley, and two Broken Bow High School coaches in the van died last Friday on a highway near Ansley in central Nebraska. Eight players in the van were taken to hospitals.

Custer County Attorney Tami Schendt says Tuesday that an autopsy shows Sherbeck died of multiple blunt force trauma due to the accident, but he had severe cardiovascular disease that may have been a contributing factor in the accident.

Sherbeck’s eastbound truck crossed the centerline and hit the westbound van. The van’s driver, Zane Harvey, and his front-seat passenger, Anthony Blum, were killed.
